#1 5 Speed gear box conversion

Hello!
A project i have in mind is switching to manual, preferably 5 speed, but so far i?m happy to have an automatic box, helped a lot to preserve the engine.
I found interesting points of view regarding that topic on this forum, here in Germany we have some getrag-fans, and i have to admit that i personally found it quite good, when i had the to drive a car converted. The JT-5 from the US as well looks quite appealing, but shipment plus vad makes up for a lot of the $-exchange rate.
The E-Fab-box sounds great, but I have some concerns regarding support in Germany and availability of parts for a longer period of time. Any thoughts about that?
Does anybody know a source for the pedalry?
Regards
Peter

The Getrag box is OK but has a slow change and the gearstick does not come out at the same angle as a Jaguar one. OK if you are used to an automatic I suppose but not a good choice to complement the characteristics of the car. I hated it with a vengeance when I tried it. The Borg Warner T5 is excellent though allowing fast sporting changes with good feel to the gear lever - its world wide popularity amongst Jaguar owners is well justified. Support is excellent.

There are several vendors. The JT5 is from a US based company who were the original designers of the Borg Warner T5 conversion: http://www.5speeds.com/6cyl22kit.html In the UK it is available from CMC - http://www.classic-motor-cars.co.uk/ but I am not sure if they do it as a kit. Derek Watson sells his own T5 conversion kit: http://www.jaguar-info.com/5speedboxes.htm which works well - indeed I have one of these and I am very happy with it. There are different kits for the 2+2 so be careful when ordering.

An alternative is to do a MOD conversion (manual with over drive) on a 2+2 and poster AndyP has done it with great success it seems so he can give you the full story. There is a web site of someone else who has done it, with pictures, here: http://www.mraven.com/Jaguar%20E-type/J ... -Type.html

In order of preference then:

1. JT5 - modify your own propshaft
2. T5 (Derek Watson) - ?2,800, includes modified exchange prop shaft
3. MOD
4. ETF (but still unproven)

I'm having one E'type Fabs 5 speed gearboxes fitted to my S1 .42 FHC demonstrator which will be available for test drive by the end of August.

I am confident that this completely new 5 Speed will prove to be the best box on the market which is why we E'type UK are offering the opportunity to try it in a car before you buy it.

This is one we will be selling and fitting in all our cars.

Your more than welcome to have to call should you wish to have a drive.

Peter,

I have a Getrag in my 3.8 litre and find it horrible - slow and clunky as David said. It may be that if you get a good, relatively unworn one it?s acceptable, mine certainly isn?t. The vendors usually claim they are reconditioned but as I subsequently found out, service parts are not available outside of bearings and seals so it?s a dubious claim.

I have a JT5 on order from 5speeds.com which will be installed this winter. I?m going to put the Getrag on ebay; anyone have an idea of value?

Harry...will the box be available with a V12 bellhousing as well? I'm leaving the S1 std, but thinking about injection and 5 speed on the S3. Fed up with towing a petrol bowser behind me!

Is the Getrag everybody doesn't like the same box as fitted into the 3.6 manual XJS? If so, once the box has about 80,000 miles under it's belt, it gets nice and free! Still a wee bit notchy when cold though.

When Harry gets that ETF box then it is most certainly worth trying before making a decision. If it is as a good as everyone concerned claims it could become the one to beat, very quickly. In fact if offered the chance I would love to try it out myself.

Hi Mark

I'm converting a V12 Auto to 5 Speed Manual and we're fitting a new bell housing as the auto one wont fit.

The new box will go straight onto the standard manual bell housing.

You can have a drive of mine when it's done.

I believe the getrag box is out of the 3.6 XJS which has a lower 1st than a standard E box (waste time) and the 5th is not much higher than standard box.

I think the Getrag for SWB E-Types is a type 265 and is ex BMW. Harry is right about first, it's mostly redundent. 5th is 0.83 : 1 so it is a decent overdrive.

Mike Frank did a very good and impartial history and review of all the 5 speed options: http://www.westnet.com/~mfrank/FiveSpeeds.html

Just been invited by Uryk at E-Type Fabs to try his new 5 speed box in his (or Harry's) demonstrator. I plan to take my car up so I can do a side by side comparison with the T5. Had a long chat with Uryk and he has an impressive knowledge of all things E-Type so I am looking forward to meeting him and getting to know the gear box. So if anyone is thinking about a 5 speed box it could be worth waiting a couple of weeks and I will post my impressions.

As I said on another post, I have arranged with Uryk to put in his 5 speed in my 3.8 towards the end of this month. I am confident it will prove to be good. Just dont know what ratio to go for yet.

Personally I would go for the 'standard' gearbox ratios (that is approximating the Jaguar ones) with a 0.8 fifth. You can then fine tune the car by changing the rear axle ratio if you want. This way you will retain the character of the car's performance and design and do what Jaguar did - change the ratios for different markets, applications and road conditions. I would not bother with a 'close-ratio' set up as there is so much torque available it makes it unnecessary.

#14 Getrag 265/225

My Understanding is that the LWB car could accept a Getrag 265 as used in later XJS cars.

But all SWN cars would need the Getrag 225.

Both seem to be a very poor choice, i was very glad to get mine out and replaced with a T5!

cheers

I'm thinking of maybe replacing my Getrag 265 and am keen to know your thoughts on the E-Type Fabs gearbox. Three of you ventured to suggest that you might have tried it by now. Harry, 'Stradman' and David (Heuer), have you had chance to try the box and if so what are your thoughts?

cheers

I know it's been a long time coming but my demonstrator with the new 5 speed fitted should be back eaither this week or next.

I will let you know when it's available so who ever is interested can come and have a drive, hopefully I should have two kits in stock at any one time so we can supply them without too much delay.

I'll keep you updated.

Still waiting for a call from Uryk. His seems meticulous in what he does (see ETF frames!) and wants to get everything right before release - it is a pain if it goes wrong, engine out, and I speak from bitter experience of another 5 speed! The wait will be worth it.

Hello,
I'd like to correct some misinformation.
The JT5 does not require a prop shaft mod. A new prop shaft is included with every kit. The JT5 is based on the T5 now produced by Tremec. It is an entirely new box built from new parts since 1995. Some made by us, and some made by Tremec. It is not a Borg Warner T5 because first off Borg Warner no longer makes the T5 and secondly it is built by us to our specs and does not compare to the shoddy quality of the Mexican built Tremec T5 transmissions.

Transmissions made by Glebe, Elite and Derek Watson use a COPY of our extension housing. They took a direct mold off of our part since at one time they actually use to sell them. This adds confusion since the products look alike, but as some already know do not perform alike.

5Speeds,

Welcome to the forum, amd sharing your knowledge. :)

It must be so frustrating when you design something and someone copies it. :(
