#1 Grease nipples for inner lower wishbones position

Post by thegfb » Tue Apr 17, 2012 12:48 pm

Can anyone throw some light on how one can get a grease gun onto the nipples located at the inner end of the lower wishbones. They seem to be very close indeed to the bottom plate of the rear suspension cage. I can see them clearly enough and the ball bearing end of the cranked nipple is pointing out but between the nipple and the bottom plate there's no clearance for the 4 jaw coupler to fit onto the nipple. Is there a much smaller diameter coupler that I should be using? I have a similar issue with the accessibility one or two of the nipples on the half shafts. No such problems with all the grease points at the front of the car thankfully!
Is there a general 'rule of thumb' as to how much grease should I be adding?
Any suggestions gratefully received.

All I can tell you is that according to my car and my parts list for a series 1, they should be straight nipples and are accessed through the 4 holes in the cage base plate. You said, I think, that yours are cranked nipples. I can also say that I can only get the gun on mine with the wheels up or down .............. and I can't remember which. My guess is that someone has assembled and greased them prior to IRS assembly.

This is a complete pain, and is variable from car to car. . I have in the past sometimes had to drop the centre base plate to get access ( it actually only takes a few minutes) . Usually, however, you can just about get the gun on if you jack the car and let the wheels hang right down
