#1 Fitting of hood envelope clips on a ?63 OTS

Post by Peter B. » Mon Apr 30, 2012 8:29 am

Hello,
having bought a 3.8 series 1 ots, without a hood envelope, I now came across the issue of fixing one, when I?ll buy one. In my owners manual I found the remark of fitting the hood envelope to the chrome strip itself, running round on the lower back of the hood. Here in the forum, on the the pictures, I see two chrome clips, on each side, being fixed under that particular chrome strip, on a 3.8 ots.
Does one really need those clips, or should I just follow the owners manual?
If they are needed, is it then just dismanteling that chrome strip and screwing them to the lower end of the hood frame, a wooden piece I assume?
Or does the chrome strip have any influence upon the correct fitting of the hood itself?
If it is not a wooden piece, where I could decide for the "right" position of the clips, does anyone have some dimensions for me?
Many thanks
Peter

The hood envelope is secured in four places. First you click the two (three on early cars) retaining strips to the rear interior bulkhead. Secondly you click the two tenax connectors (one each side) to the interior side panels. Thirdly press the U shaped end pieces onto the bodywork near the door edge. Finally (and most importantly) you tension the envelope by attaching the four 'hooks' on the edge of the envelope to the four chrome 'hooks' retained under the chrome strip. Ideally you should really have to push down hard to get them to locate and, if need be, reattach the U pieces to maintain tension. If you do not do this correctly the envelope will come loose at speed and hit you on the back of the head! Even if one of those hooks becomes unattached the envelope will start flapping wildly so you need to get it right and fitted properly.

Hello David,
thank you for the description and the right order to follow. I?m still not sure what to do about the clips themselves, as said, in the owners manual they are not mentioned. There is explicitely mentioned to attach to the rear chrome strip. But as I saw those clips, I wondered if this is an upgrade/improvement of later cars, and if they are really necessary to assure that something like you described is not going to happen.
If so, then I need to fit them, and would like to know, if this is an easy task, just dismanteling the chrome, screw them to the correct position and put the chrome back again. Or is there more to be aware of, when dismanteling that chrome strip.
Many thanks for further input

Peter

Yes, the Owners Handbook does say put the clips over the chrome but there was a later modification.

On my car I fitted these chrome clips to make it easier and more secure (part number BD 20658 - Hood Retaining Clip x4). I think Jaguar specified these because owners were having difficulty using the chrome strip to retain the hooks and there is the possibility you will damage the paintwork if you are in a hurry (aka it starts to rain :( ).

Second picture shows the U shaped body retainer and the tenax. Last picture shows the two envelope hooks. You need to get your envelope first and then make sure the chrome clips are located in the right place to match those on the envelope.

Hi David,
thanks for the further clarification. One more question, can those clips just be screwed to the lower hood frame, after taking off the chrome beading? Is this chrome beading just for the looks or does it help to secure/tension the hood itself?
Many thanks

It is really a finishing trim and not that durable. If you use it to clip the hood it will start to bend upwards at the fixing points and looks terrible. To fix the clips you need to remove the trim and drill the two securing holes for each in the appropriate spot.

Hello David,
thanks a lot, that solves all my problems!
Get a hood envelope when the car will finally be with me and then fix those clips accordingly. If I don?t forget it, take some photos and keep you updated.
All the best
