All parts are readily available and is an easy DIY restoration job. How bad is it ?

Many Thanks for the reply, the heater is not that bad I just want it to be done right as its a big unit and very visible.

The heater box is easy to disassemble and any local powder coater / painter should be able to blast it & paint it for you. Then it's just a case of a new heater element, new foam baffles (just glue them n place), new springs plus the operating lever might want painting too. I'm sure there are a few photos somewhere on this forum of a DIY restoration which may / may not give you confidence.

Bear in mind you may not be able to remove the flap as it is brazed on to the pivot rod. The motor should be an AC Delco which are easy to restore and the fan is a nylon Delaney Galley. Try and keep things original if you can as the repro Smiths motors do not fit the nylon fan and you will need to buy a metal one which does not look as good when you are peering through the mesh. Lots of info on the Forum:

This may also help but it is using the wrong motor: http://www.thegaragegazette.com/index.php?topic=444.0
