Post by rah59 » Sat Aug 04, 2012 7:14 pm

Hi all, hope someone can help

Just bought a 3.8 fhc, day one have driven about 30 miles, ammeter indicated charge most of the time, left car for a couple of hours and horn went off (ignition off). Isolated battery and checked voltage (12.6V). Havent got a wiring diagram so unsure what it can be. Dont think there is an alarm or imobiliser

thanks

Wiring diagrams here: http://www.etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1664

No idea about your fault condition because it is not typical of an E-Type. Keep us informed

Thanks David

disconnected horn at multi pin plug arrangement, after looking at wiring diagram the feed to the horn relay appears unswitched (not ignition switch controlled) so i suspect the relay contacts are closed, will check the control circuit and horn contacts with volt meter.

Many thanks for pointing me in right direction

Hi all

have just got back home after a few days away and had a look at the wiring in relation the s1 dia.

The horn relay has 4 spades W1 and 2 serve the coil circuit with C1 and 2 being the switch circuit. C2 is the feed from the fuse, this is via a brown cable with a purple tracer on the dia, my car appears to have had a new loom at some point and the cable is just brown. The cable from C1 is purple with yellow tracer as the diagram.

Terminal C1 has a double spade (switch side) onto this was connected another brown cable this as well as the other brown show +12V

does any one have any idea what this extra brown is?

both brown cables enter the loom and route toward the dash.

Given the connection of the 2nd brown this must be switched as the horn didnt go of previously but has now become live.

#5 Looking for a wiring diagram

Post by fs383 » Sat Jan 12, 2013 6:23 pm

Hi to all
I am trying to open the link to the wiring diagram http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1664 but unfortunately the link no longer works.
I am in the process to fit a new wiring loom to a 1967 E Type LHD and the old loom is of no help to me as it was cut up by the PO.
Any one with a good diagram that is willing to share??
Thanks

Coventry auto components sell a plasticised colour coded wiring diagram. It is a must have for any owner.
Don't know their website address offhand but shouldn't be hard to google.

Coventry Auto sell their booklets on Ebay covering most old Jags

This is the 4.2 one - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/E-Type-Series ... 58995fd4ec

There is also a 3.8 version

It is not plasticised and in the 4.2 version the diagram of the fuse box layout is incorrect for my 1966 car. Overall though I think it is worth having.

Regarding your horn fault I would check the steering column. Inside there there is a spring that rests against a brass collar. Sometimes this spring can come out and wrap itself around the inside causing a short to the horn relay and sound your horn.
If the spring is at fault then it will likely be wrecked and the usuals don't sell them. You can remove the spring from a Biro, it fits perfectly and should hopefully solve your problem.

Hi Dave

the horn push assembly provides the earth connection, this is working ok. I appear to have an additional cable fitted to the switched side of the relay which is permanently live, this i have traced as the fault. I have been unable to trace the other end or source of this cable so have disconnected it, fault cured! Sort of. This cable is not shown on any diagram i have have seen. After disconnecting it, all other electrical systems still work, so at a bit of a loss, speaking to the previous owner he has confirmed the car isnt fitted with an alarm so that a blind alley.

Thanks for your help
