#1 S1 OTS DOOR PANELS

Post by ALAN COCHRANE » Wed Feb 27, 2013 9:32 pm

Hi Everyone

I'm re-upholstering the interior of my 1962 OTS. The doors panels have a chrome strip approximately 3/4 of the way up from the bottom of the door. This doglegs down at about 30 degrees where the door capping ends at the front and continues on for about another 8 inches. All the suppliers such as SNG show this strip in two parts and also an additional strip running below the door handle, which my panel lacks.
Can anyone tell me which is correct-mine or the two strip version?
Can you also get the upper strip that doglegs in one piece?

Thanks in advance

Alan

Alan,

My '61 3.8 which I would think will be the same as yours has a chrome strip above the handle which is straight. It is right at the top of the door card and is the finisher between the top door capping and the door card.

Below the door handle is another chrome strip which goes from one end to the other. This is bent slightly to follow the bend in the door card as it reaches where the 'A' post is when the door is closed. I think only the 4.2's had the extra piece of chrome strip that followed the angle of the door card.
Hope that describes it OK?
If not I'll send you a photo.

Dave

Thanks for the reply. You seem to have confirmed my suspicions that my OTS is sporting non original door cards. This would also explain the confusion I had with the SNG offerings for the S1. Does your doorcard come in two parts then? The first between the bottom of the door and the first strip and the second between the two strips? A close-up photo of your doorcard would be very helpful.

Thanks Again

Alan,

The doorcard is one piece up to the top chrome strip and then there is the finisher panel which is steel and clips over the top of the door. Attached to this at the top is a felt window seal.
When you fit the door card which is basically 4mm hardboard it has to be scored on the outside as it bends slightly towards the A post end of the door.
I'll send a few photos through.

Dave

I am certain now that my door cards should have two horizontal chrome strips on them but the issue of the armrest isn't so clear. I know that your car doesn't have them but an extensive trawl of the internet shows similar 1961-63 cars both with and without them.
I'd like to throw it open to everyone if I may.
Should a 1962 S1 OTS(or FHC for that matter) have an armrest on the door?
Ideally one of the Forum's sticky's on the S1 interior would be a great help.

Cheers

Alan

According to Porter the arm rests were fitted from June 1963. OTS 850724/879496 FHC 861189/888698

Thanks for your reply. My door cards appear to be from an S1.5 or S2. I'm recovering the door cards in leather and will be fitting the correct horizontal chrome trim but I've not decided on whether to keep the armrest or not. My chief upholsterer(wife) would appreciate not having to recover them as they look a bit tricky, although she did do a good job on the passenger grab handle!

Cheers

They certainly make driving any distance more relaxing because you have somewhere to rest your elbow. But then you also need the centre console arm rest for your other elbow otherwise it gets really uncomfortable!
