Upper wishbone ball joints
#1 Upper wishbone ball joints
I am just about to send off the front wishbones and fulcrum shafts for plating and wondered what most of you have done about top ball joints. I hear they need shimming up fairly regularly and the cup cannot be pressed out. If I plate the wishbones the cup would presumably be plated, not good, so what do you all do?

Fit the CMC modified wishbones: http://www.classic-motor-cars.co.uk/upg ... pe/page/2/

Andrew,
I've just installed the CMC ball joints but I've only just started on the actual rebuild so a way off driving with them fitted.
I made the mistake of getting a kit and trying to get the wishbones machined locally. The instructions suggest annealing first. Unless you know a good machinist, I'd recommend getting complete units from CMC.

I fitted the CMC units (machined them locally) and also fitted to a customer car. No problems and would recommend them.

all good advice thanks. The only thing that is troubling me , and I am easily troubled , is matching the plating on the CMC parts with the rest of my front suspension. Thoughts?

Drive the car sufficiently that the resultant oad dust and weathering equalise any tiny difference.andrewh wrote:The only thing that is troubling me , and I am easily troubled , is matching the plating on the CMC parts with the rest of my front suspension. Thoughts?
This strategy has other benefits besides masking any plating anomalies.....

Ask CMC what plating they use? Alternatively buy t,he kit and ha ve your wishbones machined and then plated.
But I think Pete has it nailed - unless you are building a 'no go show-boat' does the different plating tint really matter? Besides the early cars had a random mix of black and cadmium plated A struts.

I bought a set of the CMC units from Barratts. They're zinc plated which matches the rest of my car. Although Jaguar used cad plating originally, this is hard to come by these days.
I looked at getting my old wishbones machined; turned out to be more economical to just buy the whole unit from Barratts.

I think that the difference between the various plating coatings is large. If you saw a dull chrome next to a yellow zinc or even a bright zinc and then a dull zinc and cad, you would really notice the difference. I do use my cars but thats not the issue. It would annoy the hell out of me if it was all different on the day it was finished.
Basically a little thought should be able to get it all plated the same. I have dropped CMC a mail and will see what he says and report back . thanks chaps
