Hi All,
Has anyone ever taken apart an early FHC rear view mirror? Mine has a mirror which is discoloring around the edges and a fixing stem which could do with re-chroming.
Any experiences appreciated, and are 7 years bad luck to be expected?
Thanks in advance,
I-Wen

Hi I-Wen
I have taken mine completely apart, getting the mirror out is not so difficult, it's just held in place by the curved edge along the top and bottom of the outer casing..slip a slim carving knife or better still a flat bladed modelling knife..not a scalpel it's too fragile... in and slide it length ways, gradually easing over the curved casing lip
I managed to persuade SNG to sell me just the mirror glass when I was there last year at an open day...the glass is not a constant thickness, as you will realise once apart..but you'll probably be able to get someone to cut and shape you one locally in KL
We should catch up next time I'm in KL
Regards
Jonathan

Thanks Jonathan.. I'll give that a go. I take it you can ease back the top and bottom edges over the new mirror.
I've sent you a pm with my contact details.
Best regards,
I-Wen

Hi
Reinstating should be straightforward, I began to put the old mirror back into test this and it seemed fine, didn't go all the way as I was trying not to fold back the aluminium too much.
Once reinstalled you should be able to curve the edge back over by running something forgiving like a piece of smooth wood along the edge, gradually curving it back into shape
Also thinking if the glass is in good condition could a mirror supplier re silver it for you...at least you know it would fit..?
Best

Just the same question I have at present! Thanks, but how did you get the stem off?

Hi Andrew
Stem is held in place with the blackened flat slim tempered steel rectangular plate, held with 4 tabs bent over it
I gently prised the tabs back open..very gently as this metal is akin to the cheap dinky toy car stuff..they don't all have to be opened up terribly much
I did this as my stem needs re-chroming
I fear one tab will snap when I reassemble, as this was the first one I did and I opened it up too much... but the other 3 will be fine..if this does happen, some super glue would hold one tab, so it will be just fine
Regards

Hi Jonathon, many thanks for this information. I assume you will chrome the small rotating end on the stem as well as that looks well and truly pressed in?

Hi Andrew
I will indeed, I took mine apart as the bend on the stem was pitted and rusty, so had some additional brass brazed in and then I filed and sanded it smooth, the ball seems integral so the whole piece will be going for a re-chrome
