#1 shell rotella diesel oil

Post by ScottMHoffman » Sat Aug 17, 2013 2:47 am

I was thinking of using shell rotella oil for diesel motors. I friend said this would be a very bad idea. I thought the issue was this oil will ruin a catalyt converter but other wise was fine. Will I be OK with using Shell Rotella?

I used Rotella donkeys years ago in a Triumph race bike. Why? Because my dad worked for Shell and an older racer told me he used it. Being younger and impressionable was my excuse, what's yours? :-)

Seriously, do you honestly think the anecdotal commentary you're going to pick up here is worth more than the expertise of one of the world's leading oil refiners and blenders? They don't just develop oil recipes by pot luck, it's a science. Run an oil suited to your engine and driving, not one made for a different situation.

The general consensus amongst fellow mechanics back in the day was that changing from an engine oil formulated for petrol engines to one formulated for diesel engines (Especially on high mileage engines) was not advisable. The reason being that as Diesel engine oil had relatively high levels of detergent in comparison to petrol engine oils there was a possibility of loosening old deposits inside the engine, which in turn could cause damage. Of course most mechanics in the construction industry don't follow this advice as Rotella or Delvac 15/40 products were freely available and so choose to ignore their own advice! I personally don't know of anyone that ever had a problem using it, please read the below information from Mobil for their Delvac 15/40 diesel engine oil, I used this in a Citroen BX GTI for around 70 odd thousand miles without any problems.

Mobil Delvac 15W-40 are extra high performance diesel engine oils that help extend engine life in the most severe on and off-highway applications while delivering outstanding performance in modern, high-output, low-emission engines including those with Exhaust Gas Recirculation and After treatment Systems with Diesel Particulate Filters and Diesel Oxidation Catalysts. Fully backwards compatible, Mobil Delvac will also deliver the same exceptional performance in older conventional engines. As a result, they meet or exceed the requirements of the API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS and CH-4 service categories as well as key Original Equipment Manufacture requirements for 2007 engines.

Mobil Delvac 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil, 1gal:
?Superior soot-viscosity control
?Greater engine efficiency, long engine life and long oil life
?Outstanding thermal and oxidative stability
?Reduced low temperature sludge build-up and high temperature deposits
?Excellent oil consumption control
?Lower oil costs due to less make-up oil during operation
?Outstanding TBN reserves
?Improved corrosion protection and extended drain intervals for both new and old engines using either low or ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel
?Stay-in-grade shear stability
?Maintains viscosity in severe, high temperature service for greater wear protection and long engine life
?Excellent low temperature pumpability
?Faster oil flow and reduced wear during engine start-up in low temperatures
?Superb resistance to corrosive and abrasive wear
?Long life of critical wear surfaces
?Component compatibility
?Long gasket, seal and after-treatment life
?Meets demanding specifications of key OEMs and latest API gasoline service category
