#1 Wiper Parking Contact early 4.2 RHD

Post by ada5 » Sat Jan 08, 2011 11:41 pm

My car doesn't have the windscreen wiper parking contact and adjustment assembly.
Does anyone know where I can get these parts from.
Thanks,
David

As far as I'm aware they are not available from anywhere so you may need to make one up from brass shim and an old set of points.
I am not even sure that the replacement wiper racks come with them?

It would be worthwhile contacting Richard Smith - he makes some of the small parts that no-one else does - if he isn't making them he might have a second hand one.

Thanks for the replies.
Dave, I think you are right about the replacement racks. I believe the one on my car is a replacement, which is why it doesn't have the contact assembly. SNG Barratt have confirmed their's do not come with them and they are not available serparately.
It is quite a complex assembly to self-construct as I need the adjustment part that fits to the bulkhead as well.
Angus, I will try Richard Smith as you suggest.

David

The easiest way around this is to fit a DL3A wiper motor from the S1.5. Early US delivery (circa 1968) S1.5 cars with rocker switches had a DL3A motor which had the park switch on the motor (you can identify these by the brown paxolin adjustable disc on the gearbox). Later S1.5 and S2 cars went back to the park switch on the wiper assembly and the round W15 motor. The DL3A has only three wires (plus earth) instead of five (plus earth) and the parking adjustment is on the motor itself. Jaguar used these because of the terminal limitations of the rocker switches. I cannot for the life of me understand why Jaguar stuck with the DL3/wiper assembly park switch when the DL3A motor provides such an elegant and easily understood/maintained solution!

The DL3A motor works by being permanently live with the ignition on. The switch controls the earth to complete the circuit, almost counter intuitive. Also there are two 'earths' (plus the body). For slow speed both the green/red and the green/brown are switched to earth. For fast speed only the green/brown is switched to earth - the green/red is disconnected. Park is of course taken care of by the paxolin disk and contact on the motor gearbox.

To get it to work with a earlier/later six pole switch however you need to connect as follows:

Motor Green to Loom Green
Motor Green/Red to Loom Green/Brown
Motor Green/Brown to Loom Green/Red

In the contact assembly photo posted above (one on the right) where does the black wire go?.... Mine is green/red and capped off floating in fuse bay area behind dip switches. My bulkhead adjustment knob is seized but I'd still like to know where this single contact wire goes. My wiper parking is defunct
Thanks, Reanime

Black from park switch goes to RLG wire.

Exactly, and where does my free floating RLG WIRE in my fuse bay area ultimately terminate? PO capped it off and left it hanging.
Thanks for help with this question

There are several wiring diagrams in the Forum Knowledge Base which should give you all the info you need. From memory the RLG goes to the switch and then to the wiper motor. On the S1 cars with the DL3 motor the motor is permanently live and the switch and/or the park switch connect the other side to earth. The RLG is the return for the motor so start with the five way multiplug on the bulkhead next to the wiper motor. Follow it through to the wiper switch and on to the park switch. It is all counter intuitive as we are used to switching the live on to get things working, this works the other way around.

Many thanks David for that explanation. As it stands, I'm having to time the moment the wipers near bottom of windscreen to turn off (park). I'd love to get this fxn working while I have dash vinyl top cover off. As mentioned my
bulkhead (engine side)thumbscrew is rusted shut but I'm still thinking I could manually adjust position of the park switch cutoff point from inside the car via the hand opening behind fuse bay where park switch is visible. I might snap a pic to show you which end of the switch has the capped off wire. I bet it is meant to be an earth wire but 2nd opinion wouldn't hurt.

Thx,
Reanime

Personally I would start by trying to get the park switch adjuster working - heat, WD40 or pentrating fluid. Trying to brodge it is not worth the trouble as you are adding to your problems. Go back to basics and do the job properly otherwise when you hit the next wiper problem we will not be able to help!

I know. Been using penetrating oil last few days. The flat recessed nut holding thumbscrew to bulkhead loosened up but to undo it gonna need someone to counter from bulkhead interior. Such an arm scraper trying to insert arm through bulkhead hand hole.
