Earlier this year I fitted a set of Vredenstein classic tyres (which I noticed at Goodwood last weekend are a very popular) based primarily that I was unlikely to be exceeding 90ish MPH when in Europe of course! However it proved very difficult to get the rears balanced and immediately blamed the tyres but in fairness I now know that the 50 year old rims are the cause. So I made the decision to purchase a new set of standard rims from MWS which as per the cars history are painted silver not chrome. The notty decision on tyres is such a personal thing but as per previous posts decided that for sure they would have to be VR rated which pitched 3 into the ring, Michelin XVS, Pirrelli Cints. and Blockleys. I swear by michelins for my modern wheels but gained an impression that the XVS might not be so precise through the twisties but would provide good life and of course without trying them I hold up my hands (to devotees). The Pirelli Cints I have used in the past but do recall at the time that a direct comparison between they and the Dunlop RS5's did not provide such a feelsome response. In the end it came down to needing the tyres and wheels quickly for a trip to the Goodwood revival and actually liking the look of the tyre - they were also a little less in cost but was not the deciding factor.
I called in at MWS (Nr Slough) on the way down for the change over and although the curly hub design does not exactly match the 50 year old originals I did feel better knowing that it was new metal in the vital place.
I then drove the 100 miles down south and immediately felt so much more relaxed with no imbalance issues and by the journeys end in the dry I was fully enjoying a superior turn in feel which just adds to the confidence. The dry 90 mile drive into Goodwood the following morning was excellent and little came past me along the A and M 27, during the return run in the evening the rain was very heavy with much spray and standing water and apart from the dismal headlamps the car felt very secure on the variety of soaked surfaces. I have since recieved a report from MWS that two of the original wheels are not worth refurbishing so I am looking for a pair of straight original wheels as I would like to have a spare set painted in the cars colour as (I believe) was a Jaguar option and shod them with a set of RS5's for that original look on the odd occasions. I also have the 4 new (purchased April) Vredensteins - 1000 miles use - if any one wishes to make me an offer?

Yes me too - but one does have to allow for a good margin in stopping distance!adam wrote:I use my car on RS5s all the time, i like the look of an E TYPE on tall skinny tyres.
