#1 Koolmat over original floorpan weepholes?

I'm embarking on kool matting the interior and could use some guidance. Anybody care to share whether or not I should cover up original floorpan weepholes with thermoacoustic barrier du jour? So far every pic I've seen shows them covered up defeating their purpose and design of keeping floorpans ah-hem...rust-free. On the other hand, I suppose having carpet and underlayment over exposed weepholes defeats purpose of barrier...hmmm...what to do??

I used a variety of different sized blanking grommets fitted from below to fill the holes before I glued the Koolmat in place.

I also blanked the holes with grommets before fitting the Kool matt.
I put the grommets in from the outside then sealed with Sikaflex on the inside before I painted the shell.
I also sealed around the edges of the Kool matt because in the past I have found where the floor changes shape you can get a small gaps that allows water to creep under. These places never dry out and it's surprising how much water feet lift into a car on a wet day.

For me, one of the benefits of fitting Koolmat was that once installed (and with the edges of the pieces effectively sealed as Warren comments) any water entering the cabin will sit on top of the Koolmat and will not reach the metal of the floorpan. When I do get water in there, I just lift out the footwell carpets and let them dry out, and can mop up standing water from the footwell. Seems to work well so far.

Like others I sealed the drain holes in the floor with grommets before fitting the Koolmat.

Excellent. I'll get some sikaflex no prob, not sure about grommets but I will procure somehow somewhere. Good idea on the carpet. I won't glue it down. My only regret was not lining the inner tranny tunnel with liner when we replaced clutch and flywheel. Ratz.

Thanks again for the pearls.

I found it worthwhile cutting or punching out the holes you'll need in the Koolmat before anything is glued in position - such as the 4 holes each side for the carpet studs, holes for the radius arm straps and spacers for the seat runners.

The spacers can then be used to align the Koolmat as it's being positioned when it's glued down.
