PL700's are reproduced and cost about £90/pair. Originals will cost you £200/pair+ if you can find NOS. There is a thread on PL700's here:
http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... ight=pl700 and here http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... ight=pl700. Butler number plate light surrounds are not reproduced so you will need to find an original pair. You should check our 'Factory Fit' thread as it will give you lots of things to think about e.g Cheney clips, Champion 'spot' plug caps and lots of other hard to find parts!

Found a nice pair of resilvered PL700s, but the Butler's are are rare thing now. I wonder why on earth I let my last pair go 15 years back!

Wonder how much the Butler's surrounds are worth? I have a pair on my car, not that they are for sale at any price!

The Butlers surrounds were fitted up until about January 1962; the first 1,200 or so OTS's, but only about 50 FHC's would have had them. Looks like Jaguar placed an order for 2,500 or 3,000 of the little blighter's before going elsewhere.

Apart from the name they are identical to the Lucas items:

Clearly not much demand otherwise someone would have reproduced them.

There is a pair on ebay right now, they are different from David's picture however. It is not only a surround but also the cover. Strangely enough they seem to come in Leyland boxes ("boxes only opened for photograph") ...

Thanks for the heads up Pim. I have seen that type before and there are pictures here: http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2006&start=40 I will add that eBay picture though!

By the way - the Butlers surrounds on Ebay that finished on Monday 13th January went for ?310, (Three Hundred and Ten Pounds Sterling), for the pair after a 5 bid fight.

Still you at least got a pair of lenses thrown in as well !!

So beware and lock up your cars with these Butlers surrounds !!!

regards,

Dave

I thought that I'd let you all know that I finally found a pair in January. In fact, I was staying with a dear friend and mentioned the issue, knowing he also loves his Jaguars and has a 1961 fixed head. He disappeared then came back with a used pair which he kindly gave me. It would appear that I owe him a very stiff drink! And just to think that about 20 years ago they were selling in their boxes for ?15 a pair! So what does that make my original immersed pump, still BNIB in its waxed paper, worth today? I recall paying ?25 at a spares day yonks back. So many parts for the early cars seem to be at a premium now. Are the early boot lid rubbers still available, the early header tanks and so on?

ETA Wasn't it so that Butlers were bought out by Lucas in January 1962 and that's why the name changed? Or perhaps I heard it wrong and it's part of an erroneous folk lore.

Just an update on the Butler chromes. I was told recently that RS Panels make them at £50 a pair.
