Having purchased a used powr lok diff I need to be sure it will behave before I fit it
Has anybody rebuilt their own? If so can anyone tell me how many friction plates are fitted to a 2+2 series 1 4.2
Hope someone has this information
Best regards Paul

Hi Paul,
I have re-built many Powr-Lok diffs in my Hot Rodding and Custom days and then later for direct drive Grass Track cars which don't use a gearbox, but need the diffs set up for the specific track they are running. I also used to change the crown wheel and pinions to swap the ratios for various set-ups. I am at work at the moment so limited in accessing my workshop notes until I get home tonight.
If we are just talking about the Powr-Lok unit, this is pretty simple to service and basically needs the case separating and seeing how badly the plates are worn or scored due to poor maintenance or incorrect lubrication. The attached service manual should assist and generally the 4HA diffs used in Jaguars are like Figure 15 on page 6 having the 5 Surfaces Dished Plate set up on each side of the differential case. This arrangement uses one "Belleville" dished plate at the end of the clutch plate assembly which also comprises 2 off each of the friction plates - both disc and plate types on each side of the differential case.

I can write some more tonight if you need any more information, but this should start you off.

Dave
