Simple Door rubber question. FHC
#1 Simple Door rubber question. FHC
ok, so I have read most of the posts on door rubbers but cannot answer my specific question, so apologies for getting this subject going again.
Question; Is the top inner door seal on a 62 FHC the same as the seal that goes around the quarter light? I have a channel riveted to the body that goes all the way from the bottom corner of the Quarter light and right around under the rain gutter down to the front bottom of the windscreen pillar. The seals I bought from SNG have the A post rubber integral to this seal and it only goes as far as the QL hinge pillar. It is a totally different extrusion to the rear quarter light and being light and spongy will not grip in the channel. I note in the parts book that the A post seal is a separate seal to the seal that fits in this riveted on channel. My thought is that the SNG seal is for a later car, perhaps a series 2, it has a U section around the door aperture where as the other seal is a flat slightly taper seal which works very well on the QL so should seal the door as well. Therefore if this is correct I would have to cut the A post seal off at the waist/bottom of windscreen pillar.
Hope that's clear

ha, obviously not such a simple question after all. Now why did I not got to Harrys to see the Opalescent FHC survivor when he had it there. Not still there is it?

You're right, it wasn't a simple question but if I'd followed it the answer is probably simple, depending on how your shell has been constructed and how your parts fit. Chopping up parts is usually a sign you're doing something wrong, although cutting that seal off at the top of the A post is SOP for SWB convertibles.andrewh wrote:ha, obviously not such a simple question after all. By contrast, 'Is there a God?' Is a very simple 4-word question, but the answer is probably complex, depending on how your brain has been conditioned and whether your theories fit. :-)
Good luck

Ok so the question was not as simple as it could have been. Lets have another go!
Is the door seal the same extrusion as the quarter light seal? There that's easy
Now as far as is there a God...

No, not in my experience. Others will give you the benefit of theirs.andrewh wrote:Ok so the question was not as simple as it could have been. Lets have another go!

On my '62 the upper part of the front door seals are exactly the same section as the quarterlight seals. The top part of the door opening has the same type channel as the rear windows.
The seals are composite though, with a moulding at the waist line and a completely different section down the front of the door.
Mine are Jaguar seals, bought years ago in London but I know that many of the afermarket seals cause problems by being too hard or just plain wrong.

Thank you Clive. This is exactly what I thought. Namely that the new seals from some suppliers are not the original specification and have perhaps been manufactured to try to solve draught issues. The ones supplied by SNG are integral with the lower A post seal and do not match the QL seal . Anyway, with apologies for using Classicar Garages NL photo it's the only one I can find out there with what I believe to be the correct seal. Now all I need is the correct seal for the lower A post.

Andrew,
If you find out where you can get proper seals, please post up the info.
Many of mine could do with being renewed but I dread the search for new ones. I have boxes of junk seals that I couldn't use, wrong or didn't fit right and many were supplied by the same large suppliers that others are always recommending.

I certainly will. The seal you see on the door in the photo comes from sng as it looks identical to mine which came from them. I will speak with COH Baines to find out about their A post seal or else I will cut the the seal I had from SNG and just use the lower half. Photos to come. A

Not a simple question but a pic here if it helps
Always welcome to come take a look when you're bored.....You might even learn how not to do it.

Thanks Lee. Very good of you and yes I better come over to see HOW to do it. That looks superb. I reckon you have the all in one Baines rubber. But I have these but they do not fit into the channel very well at all as they are so soft they won't hold in. Did you have to glue them in Lee? Oh. And how is the sun tan?

Andrew.....Remember the cant rails have to be screwed in through the channel that holds the rubber so they will have to be removed again.
Mick Turley placed the remaining rubbers in around that area. Doubt they're glued in.

Ok thanks Lee. Seems to me it's best to leave this until the trim is done. Getting close to needi g trim well after engine and box in and test driven. Did you drive it around much before sending for trim Lee. Presumably no rear screen for starters ?

Yes no rear screen or seats.
I drove in up and down the drive a few times, got a massive yo yo on and when I inspected it I found the track rod end was just dangling finger tight through the arm.

Wow that was a bit close. I wonder how many owners have crashed their car within 100 metres of starting off! Let me know when I can come up to look at the rubber please Lee.

Perfectly clear!
While searching the forum I'm happy to find your old post since I have the same issue.
Impossible to find a proper door seal to fit the retainer along the Apost and roof.
I am wondering if I should use the quarter light seal.
How did you solve this finally?
Did you cut the door seal at the waist and use QL seal along the windscreen pillar and roof?
if yes is it a good fit on the door frame ?
thanks
