#1 Glovebox Fitting

Hi,
I'm just finishing off the glovebox on my 62 OTS. The top is clamped to the back of the dash via a steel channel, and on the side I've seen some additionally clamped with a washer on the back of one the bolts for the passenger handle. However I'm not sure how the bottom is secured. There are 3 screw holes in the underside of the dash however if I were to screw up through them into the glovebox then the screw tips would protrude into the glovebox compartment. Furthermore I believe these holes are for attaching the under dash panels anyway.
I'm also not convinced they were bonded to the back (with say a contact adhesive) as there's no evidence of this previously.
Any advice gratefully received.

I think they were riveted originally.

The screw holes under the dash panel are indeed for securing the base of the glovebox. The under-dash panel is notched to clear these screws and is retained simply by lying on top of the the fascia lower edge and then held in place by screws further forward into brackets with spire nuts.
It's a bit Heath Robinson, to be honest. If I recall correctly, there are tubular spacers which fit between the upper edge of the fascia lower edge, and the bottom of the glovebox base, and you do indeed have to be careful with the length of the screws. What I did was to epoxy a strip of aluminium bar to the bottom of the glovebox, which when drilled gave the screws something a bit stronger than 50-year old cardboard to bite into and made sure I could cut the screws to the correct length and still get good bite. It also helped give a good shape to the box base to counteract the effects of age.
I don't have any pictures to show, unfortunately.

Hi,
I think the glovebox on the bottom side is secured to the dash with copper split rivets with distance washers between the dash panel and glovebox

Yes I did but my response was included in the last line of the original post . "I think they should be riveted". As a follow on, as stated, its a copper split rivet but i've never seen spacers.

I had there spacers(same size as used on headlamp scoops)on my 63 FHC
but really dont know if they were factory fit.

Yes, I can confirm I also have 2 copper split rivets - each with round spacers to mount the bottom of my glove box.

I just checked the original spacers and box which are sitting on the shelf. As stated above, there are two rivets. Spacers are 0.19" thick.
