#1 Slotted vs Phillips (posidriv) on side lens S1 4.2

Post by Tom Keohan » Sat Feb 22, 2014 9:06 pm

I am sure this has been flushed out before, but there seems to some confusion on the topic. According to the JCNA S1 E-type judging guide, the S1 side marker/stop lamp lens screws are "slotted." However on the S1 Factory Fit section of this forum explains 3.8's were slotted and 4.2 were posidriv (Philips). I have seen several S1 4.2 cars with pozidrive.
Part number 8606 'Screw, securing lens'. On the 3.8 cars these side/indicator lens screws should be slot head and not the pozidrive head seen on the 4.2 cars. They are chrome plated and have a small lead in nipple at the start of the thread, which is peculiar to Lucas.
The S1 4.2 factory spares book does not say either way. Does anyone have documentation, or know where I might find it to confirm which is proper for the S1 4.2- slotted or posidriv?

By the way I am new to the forum. I have owned Triumphs and MG's since I was in college, some 30 plus years- and restored by first E-type (S2 DHC)in the mid to late 80's. Since then I've owned 15 Jaguars and now restoring my '66 FHC. Can't believe I did not find this wonderful forum earlier!

Don't think I have seen a date for the changeover to pozi but I expect there will be 1965 build cars which had slotted because the early ones were 3.8 body shells mugged up for the 4.2 running gear. If you find a supplier of the correct slotted chrome screws please let us know because they seem to be unobtainable.
