#1 Moss Gearbox - bearing outer ring loose?

Post by fredmec00@hotmail.com » Mon Mar 03, 2014 9:58 am

Gents,

I finally received the 1962 Moss Gearbox to install on my e-
type 1963. It has massive play in the horizontal direction,
constant pinion shaft, 1/8''. The reason for this movement is
that the bearing outer ring is loose on the housing.

Is it ok to install this transmission the way it is?

I posted a video on youtube showing the outer bearing ring
moving in the housing. See link below:

ANY COMMENTS ARE VERY WELCOME!

Cheers,
Fred

I wouldn't be concerned about the longitudinal play. The bell housing will hold that when it's installed.

But the outer race seems to be quite loose being able to turn so easily in the housing. It definitely wouldn't hurt to use a bit of Loctite bearing fit compound or something similar on the outer surface of the bearing. It's a long time since I rebuilt my Moss but I don't think the bearing was that loose.

Johnney,

The pinion does have a collar and a lock-ring installed. but the outer bearing ring runs loose. Not sure if the bell housing could prevent it from rotating and wear out the gearbox case.

Should I go for lock compound or machine and fit at smaller tolerance bushing? Or even do nothing assuming the bell housing will prevent it from rotating!

Thanks for the help,
Fred

Make sure the bearing housing is clean then apply bearing fit grade Loctite (Red) to the outer circumference of the bearing and push it fully in.
