Radio Speakers 3.8 Console
#1 Radio Speakers 3.8 Console
Guys
Can anyone recommend a good or really good speaker set that will fit in the 3.8 Radio console and speaker aperture without crowding out any radio I may put in there? I don't really want to start pulling the console out once the car has been trimmed. I recall when stripping the car, it was quite a challenge with the centre dash and console fitted.

The 6.5" speakers can only be 2" deep if you fit a standard radio which rules out anything with decent sound quality. Trying to find speakers of those dimensions is just about impossible nowadays anyway - I have a pair of Sakura ones in my OTS but I can't find a supplier any more. There is also the problem that if you fit two back to back they will be in phase, but in a bad way as they will be working against each other cancelling out the sound. Suggest you consider a Retro-Sound radio which will allow deeper speakers: http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... o+speakers
Alternative is to put the speakers in the foot-wells as other have done. Depends how original you want to be.

The question of originality is an interesting one. It has to be remembered that stereo radio was a thing of the future when the E appeared even in 4.2 guise, and it was not really until the mid 1970s that car stereo radio became less rare. Thus 1 speaker was the norm for a long time, with more sophisticated setups in expensive saloons having a rear speaker as well. My mark 2, for instance, only has as factory standard a single speaker on the left hand side of the car. Consequently, you are not really abandoning originality if you opt for footwell speakers and/or in an FHC or 2+2 the possibility of speakers in the hollow spaces just behind the doors

Ah decisions decisions! I want to keep original , but ideally wanted to get some speaker in there which I would use with my IPOD radio thingy. I have referred to this thingy a few times without naming it so have just been to the garage to get the box . Its called an IQ Play2 and I have one fitted to my DB5. Basically it is wired to the car battery and speakers and allows you to have Bluetooth telephone and music from your Iphone ( probably works off other phones as well) I now have to check whether it works on positive earth but that's another issue. Anyway it needs speakers in place and of course I would have a radio in there for looks but back to the speakers I do want to keep them in the original pods

Another thought is that Father XMAS just bought my middle daughter something called a BIGJAM BOX Bluetooth speaker which has 12 hours of battery life in it. Marvellous sound which I suppose one could take in the car and have great music until the battery runs out. How many trips are you doing without stopping for an overnight recharge?

will be interested in how many of your take this to your heart (The IQPlay2) I regard it as a very good solution to FM radio and music as well as Blue tooth telephone within your classics.

Andrew - If the space taken by the radio is what renders the installation of deep speakers difficult, yet you're not going to even use the radio, wouldn't it be possible to just install a radio facade with zero depth behind it ?

Well that's an idea yes. I need to do a bit of work on this whilst the console is all out of the car. I had just hoped someone had already been through this and could point me in the right direction.
I continue to consider all options including not fitting a radio at all. Normally I would not bother until I am sure but I really don't want to tear it all down once its all trimmed and back together.

This is the back of my console. It has an 'old look' modern USB, mp3 etc radio and 2 x 4" speakers 2" deep. It only just fits.
Speakers seem to be readily available and have decent sound for their size.
(Not that I ever listen when I'm driving - I turn them on on the garage sometimes)

Somewhat of a thorny problem and the answer can be expensive. In the end I bit the bullet and went here:-
http://www.tadpoleradios.co.uk/RadiosFo ... ccessories
Having had them modify the radio for FM etc. the speakers need to be able to take the higher wattage output.
