#1 Difficulty in starting Series 1.5 from cold

Post by stewart » Fri Mar 21, 2014 4:37 pm

Difficulty starting of Series 1.5 from cold takes time and turning over starter motor (car housed in a garage). This is, whether Choke is used or not leaving time after the SU pump has stopped ticking, the battery is fully charged.

Once the car is running it is fine and starts immediately and performs well it is only when cold and left for one or two days.

Are there any tips or techniques members can advise to improve starting at the press of the button e.g. pressing the accelerator pedal, using different choke settings, etc ?.

Regards,

Stewart

Andrew Turvey of CMC on starting an E-Type on a cold morning - "turn off the choke completely, push the accelerator to the floor and hold it there whilst cranking the engine over. Usually the engine fires-up, struggles asthmatically for five seconds then dies. Hopefully, it will then fire-up again using a little choke and less throttle". Why? "....... throttle flat to the floor is to add huge amounts of air to the fuel that has already been drawn into the engine. The air/fuel ratio becomes correct and if we have a spark - hey presto!"

Counter intuitive but give it a go.
