#1 Washer bottle

Post by Silverspeed » Wed Jun 18, 2014 10:44 pm

Need some advice please . The base if my washer bottle pump had broken off and although the pump is working the water is just being recycled within the bottle. Decided to order a new lid and motor complete but it has arrived with two electric terminals and my old one has three. Tried putting the positive to positive and negative to negative leaving what I thought would be the earth disconnected but the pump just comes on as soon as I switch the ignition on i.e. Not using the switch. Can anyone shed any light on why my old one has three terminals and the new one two and how I can make it work please?

The Lucas 2SJ Screenjet windscreen washer and glass bottle was fitted to the 3.8 cars. It was replaced on the 4.2 cars with a Lucas 5SJ windscreen washer in a plastic bottle. What is unique about the 2SJ version is it had a one touch, 5 second wash facility requiring three connections. It worked as follows. Flicking the washer switch started the motor running by connecting it to earth and also heated a bi-metallic strip enclosed in the motor housing which maintained an earth circuit allowing the motor to run when the switch was released. As the bi-metallic strip cooled the motor was switched off. There is a screw adjustment on the top of the motor housing to set the delay. In addition the washer impeller was at the end of a shaft enclosed in a plastic shroud which acted as a filter and to create a vortex of fluid assisting pressure. Frankly it was a hopeless system as setting the delay was difficult and if it went wrong it caused the motor to burn out. Having the impeller remote from the motor increased drag which also caused the motor to burn out. They come up frequently on eBay (they were fitted to many British cars of the period) but invariably include the caveat "Not tested but looks good". They can easily be distinguished from the 5SJ or repro's by the fact they have three contacts, the 5SJ has only two. The 5SJ also does not have the remote impeller as it uses a more conventional pump and works a lot better.

So basically you have a ignition switched 12v live (green wire) and two earth wires - one is permanently connected to earth (black) and the third wire goes to the dash switch (green/black). You need to connect the green wire and the green/black to the washer and tie off the loose and now un-required black wire. No need to insulate it as it is already going to earth. Alternatively you can swap over the outer motor cases so you have the old SJ2 cover on the SJ5 one. This means you still have three spades (and the period correct markings) to attach the wires to. The delay will not work because it will be a dummy. Can't recall if you will have to resolder the two motor wires or whether you just unscrew the terminals and move them across.

Thank you very much for the reply. Now I know which wires go where I will fit it tonight. Regards

Alternatively you can replace the existing 2SJ motor with a standard Lucas pump (see link below) which is what some of the repro lids contain. This maintains exactly the same external appearance as it retains the bakelite cover and tubes can be connected into the original take up tube so anyone peering in only sees what appears to be original set up. It does however require sacrificing your original lid as it necessitates an approx 10p sized hole to be cut to house the new pump.
