#1 Is this normal

Post by Mace » Sun Aug 17, 2014 5:56 pm

Hi,

Started stripping the centre consul today, upon pulling back the vinyl found that the aluminium trim was underneath. Is this normal as I thought it was discontinued in 63, my car is a 3-8 1964 OTS. Was this still a option on later cars? and maybe with the storage armrest as I would like aluminium trim like the earlier cars but with the armrest storage

Regards

Mark

Yes, Mark, this is normal. When the factory switched to vinyl for the consoles, they simply applied vinyl over their remaining stock of completed '63 aluminum-covered consoles until this stock ran out. Given that your car is a '64 3.8 (i.e., an early '64), this would confirm that your console is original to your car.

Mark,

I went to see the pictures of restoration of your E-Type.
Amazed to see that at some stage you separated the shell in two parts, front and rear. Any reason to do that?
Also curious to know if the aluminum panels were for the whole console, facia panel and gear knob parts or only under the vinyl of the horizontal main part.
My E-Type is a late 64 3.8 model with the center arm rest and I doubt it has this underneath material but I will check, in case;)
Cheers
