#1 3.8 FHC tailgate hinge trim and prop

Post by stephen.mather » Fri Sep 19, 2014 5:06 pm

Hi Guys

My S1 3.8 FHC chassis number 860671 has no cover trim on the tailgate hinges, neither on the tailgate lock. SNG Barratt tell me trim is not listed in the original parts manual for this chassis number, neither did the vehicle have a tailgate prop to keep the door open, this only being fitted from 860001 to 860478. Their sales catalogue also only quotes these items as appropriate to the S1 4.2 in series 1 cars. Can anyone confirm this? I never acquired a tailgate prop with the car when I bought it for restoration, and as the trim was largely missing or replaced very badly, I cannot be sure about the hinges and lock.

Thanks
Steve

A development on the tailgate prop.

It seems that the original prop part number BD 21279 fitted up to 860478 was superseded from 860479 by part number BD 23752

I still can't find any more info on the hinge or lock cover trims.

Cheers

All FHC's had a tailgate prop, but the design changed at car#860478 because they had a habit of slipping out of the receiving bracket and hitting the owner on the back of the head. The correct one for your car is BD21287 which is the same as the assembly fitted to the early 4.2's. SNGB show it superseding to the earlier prop BD21279. :? So either go for the earlier version or fit the later 4.2 folding version #BD27357.

The cowls on the hinges/lock were fitted from around March 1964.

If you fit the early tailgate prop never, repeat never, leave the car unattended with the tail gate open. The slightest breeze will cause it to collapse and. most probably, pop out the rear screen.

The saga continues.
I now have tailgate stay (a rod) BD 21279 with its bracket to mount it to the car, but Barratts cannot supply the mechanism the rod engages with to hold the door open.

Would anyone be able to send me an image showing:
1. how and where the bracket mounts to the car or the door
2. what the engagement mechanism is?

I'd be very grateful for help on this.

Here you go. You need the stay, hinge bracket, rubber stay keep and the engagement bracket to complete the ensemble. Try Richard Smith for the missing parts (mention the Forum, it always helps!).
