#1 Rear Number Plate Chrome Strip

I'm slowly rebuilding my S1 2+2 which came in many parts. I'm confused with the chrome strip which surrounds the recess in which the rear number plate is housed. On cars I have seen this strip seems to be a tight push fit onto a narrow flange which protrudes for this purpose. But on my car there is no such flange. It's possible the bodywork was changed as all the restoration work on the body was completed before I bought the car, but if it was they did a very good job of removing the flange as the recess is very nicely rounded and finished, much as you would expect from the factory if there was no flange ever on the car. I should add that all chrome trim came with the car with the exception of the strip round the rear number plate. The car is a July 1966 model. Does anyone have any ideas?
