Hi everybody

While the passenger's side under dash panel is present on my car, the driver's side one (or one of them) is missing.





It seems that it was removed to install an electric switch (red one) for forcing the radiator's cooling fan, also maybe because he had issues with one of two radio tweeters installed.

In the spare parts I was given with the car there is the following panel:



I have two questions:

1. Is that spare panel an original one that was drilled to install the radio tweeter or was it made by the PO and if so, can you confirm it should be installe on the left side of the steering shaft?
2. And are panels available for the right side of the steering shaft?

Yes, that looks original. You can buy either fibreboard or aluminium under panels from SNGB but they are quite expensive (?45 - ?80/set) or make up your own from 1.2mm aluminium sheet. The aluminium under-panels from SNGB are not trimmed by the way.

I found the set. Seems that the alu one is not available right now.
I'll try rescuing that one then :)

Smart place for the tweeters Serge, first time I see this, but I frankly doubt of the efficiency!

I also doubt, for tweeters in that place...
Anyway they don't work and I intend not to use them, even if I will keep them in place because of the now existing holes in the panels.

I have purchased a period radio that I will install instead of the current one which was ugly. Here is the new one:



It is only with a mono output (8 ohms?) so that, if I use in parallel two 8 ohm speakers in the console that hopefully are still acceptable, I cannot have two additional 8 ohm tweeters (that would for sure fry the the system).

I just made a set based on my old fibre boards. Traced around them and used a 'nibbler' to cut out the aluminium . I still had to trim them to fit but it was not that difficult. I will try and make some patterns and post them on error the weekend.

David, did you have any luck making the patterns? I could do with both passenger and driver's side. Both are missing and down as a winter project to make up replacements.

Yes, I have found the originals that I made a pattern from. Just trying to figure out the best way to get them into a format you can print out that will be the correct size.

How easily can you put them on an A4 printer/scanner at multiple angles? We could then print several pages and cut/paste them together. Only an idea, and you've probably already dismissed it.

Print to A4. R/H side is in two so join up the parts with the measurements given and it should be correct but who knows with printers Please bear in mind:

a) these were from a 4.2, fibre board and may have been previously cut or adjusted to fit
b) you will probably need to trim them to fit your car
c) you may want to cut oversize on some edges
d) you may want to use card before committing to ally

I transferred the patterns to 1.2mm aluminium sheet, used a air nibbler to cut them out and a file to finish. It was then a case of offering up to the car and using tin snips to get a good fit, bending the aluminium as necessary and drilled holes for the retaining screws. Finally I sprayed both ally and vinyl with Dunlop adhesive and glued them together. I used a sharp knife to trim the vinyl to the ally. Do not bother trying to wrap the vinyl around the ally it will invariably come undone and, besides, you cannot see the edges when it is fitted.

If it works I will do the passenger side panel.

Printed on A4 they seem to be correct size to that you suggest.

By the looks of them they are the top two items in the SNGB listing that Bahadori posted?
The first one (part 1 and 2 of r/h side) is recognisable, but the other one doesn't look very close. Had it been modified much?

I think/assume the cards changed shape between the S1 and S2, with the introduction of the collapsible steering column. The cards that I received in my S2 trim kit (Suffolk & Turley) are different from SNG photo earlier in the post:

Pictures of the 3.8 and S1 4.2 boards for completeness. I had to mirror image the 4.2 SNGB picture as it showed the LHD version:

The 4.2 version is fairly simple but the 3.8 version is so complex buying from SNGB at ?30 (not vinyl covered) is a no-brainer!

Note: SNGB now have full parts diagrams for the S2 on their web site.

These patterns are for RHD obviously.
If I am correct those for LHD should just be the mirror images, so that I could use the same (upside down).
I'l give it a try

Edit: I see now the patterns from SNGB for the 3.8 (my car). They are quite different from the 4.2... would need some tuning
