I hesitate to post this because I am opening myself up to possible ridicule and will probably do a hand slap when y'all answer this off the wall question. I purchased my '64 FHC in 1970 and something has been bothering me since day 7 after the purchase. When looking at the front bonnet opening, on the passenger side (LHD), there is a slight hump in the inner flange where the duct intersects the lower pan, seemingly from interference. I do realize that the duct has been painted black from its original Cream, so perhaps it was removed at some point. The under bonnet and firewall were painted black by the PO as was common back in the day in the US. I wondered 45 years ago if this hump was normal, but did absolutely no investigation at that time. Now that I have found this wonderful website with worldwide experts, it is time to ask...was the hump due to a factory fit issue? I bought this car from its original owner and have no indication of any "accident", ever, but that doesn't mean that there was not an undisclosed one. I have looked at pictures on the net of many cars and in some, it appears that there is a hump, but the preponderance of examples shows no hump. When I get around to removing the bonnet and possibly "rebuilding" it, will I be able to rearrange things and remove the hump? Here are pictures of my car and several examples from photos on XKEData showing what appears to be similar humps on vehicles near mine in build date.

Interesting question Richard. The 1963 FHC from our Factory Fit thread seems to show a 'bump' on the other side of the mouth:

I've got the hump now as mine hasnt got one
It seems to be where the airducts meet the mouth and I'm guessing was easier to adjust the flange rather than take the bonnet apart to bend back the airduct end. Jaguar werent too fussy were they when these were being built as demand was high etc.

10 out of 10 for an eye catching thread title !
And 10 out of 10 for owning your E for 45 years. Quite unique acheivement I would presume.

Having restored my bonnet it is very difficult to get the inner wings far enough forward to bolt to the flanges and the underpan without distorting the mouth.
The inner wings have a trumpet shaped end and the inner part a vertical panel. They don't fit together easily and Jaguar probably just forced it in so it would fit and left it like that.

Hope they did not come out of the factory like that or all the concours chaps will be putting bumps in theirs.

My 65 OTS has a relatively unmolested original bonnet.
Yes - it still has that hump each side.
So the concours judges should indeed consider adding those humps to their checklists!
