#1 Joan Baez flat-floor 1961 roadster nabbed by IRS

Post by HistoryBuff » Sun Jan 25, 2015 3:48 pm

That "news" is 51 years old but I am car historian trying to find out what her dark gray LHD flat floor--which she bought new in Monterey Calif. in 1961--was sold for in '64 after the government nabbed the car, a house in Carmel-by-the-sea and acreage from the singer. Her crime? She was against the war in Vietnam and had announced she was not going to pay 60% of her taxes. Money was rolling in because she had become one of the leading songstresses of the protest movement. I am betting that an angry government even sold it below market just to increase the amount she owed...does anyone know the amount the IRS sold it for or if the car still exists? Ms. Baez by the way is still alive and well up in Monterey...

You could check out www.xkedata.com. Do a search on LHD and, presumably OTS, remembering that the outside bonnet lock cars finished at car #875386 (Aug 1961) and the flat floor at car #876582 (Jan 1962).

#3 I checked on the data base and found one delivered to Carmel

Fun to use that data base, I don't know if it had outside bonnet catch. Chassis number 8789531 flat floor LHD was delivered March 13, 1962 apparently was red when new but now opalescent silver
maybe now owned by someone in Murrell's Inlet SC. I had heard she bought the car in 1961 and her car was sold by a dealer in Monterey CA but maybe the Data base records it as the city of the original buyer, which would be Carmel. So if anyone knows the SC owner, please tell him or her to give me a shout so I can find out what the IRS sold it for in '64. If I can get this info I'll even paint a picture of it ,and furnish prints for the owner and Ms Baez (whose hair is opalescent silver as well...)

My car is 876959, lhd 62 ots. It does not have side catches or a flat floor so I assume the car 8789531? Seems a bit late to be a flat floor or side catch.

Is 8789531 the right number as it seems to have to many digets?

#5 It was theonly one delivered in Carmel working back

But the dealer was in nearby Monterey so, if the listings are based in city it the dealership was in, it should say Monterey. She bought it off the showroom floor so it was not built to order as it would be if she had ordered one with her choice of exterior & interior colors. I will check the number again and this time look for Monterey. Incidentally there is a documentary about her that shows the car but I don't have it, otherwise I could check if it has outside bonnet releases.

Thanks for all the help. I have never used a data guide like that, very handy
