Im trying to fit an external mirror on my (Series one 1966) to my drivers side door and therefore need access to the inside of the door panel. Would it be possible for some one to advise as to how to gain access and any problems I'm likely to encounter?
Kind regards

Hi Lusso, page N20 of the service manual should give you all the information for removing the door trim.
Be careful when you fit door mirrors, there are several threads on the forum discussing the options and (dis)advantages. I have a pair of Tex mirrors from SNGB, but it took a lot of fiddling to get the angle right as they have little adjustment, so check your trial fit several times with a helper to hold mirror.
SNGB might have two versions of the mirror, following some complaints about the angle of the arm where the mirror is attached. Best chat to them about it before an order.
My mirrors are positioned further back than ideal, so try for as far forward as you are comfortable with to get the best view.
Some people like the mirrors that fit into the window channel, but my experiences were poor. Though it might be a useful starter for you.

You first need to remove all what is fixed to the door panel (door handle, lower chrome, window crank, etc) and then you can carefully pull the panel against you, starting from the bottom.

Unfortunately I'm not in possession of page N20 - is it just a case of removing the two handles & the arm rest, but does the panel split at the top horizontal chrome strip?

Yes there are actually two panels on the door, the join hidden by the chrome strip. Although my car is a very early S1 it came to me with S1.5 door panels fitted, complete with armrests.
I seem to remember that the chrome was attached to the door via screws and the upper panel lower edge fitted behind it while the lower panel hooked into the 'u' shaped profile of the strip.
You will have to gently lever off the lower door panel via it's 20 odd spring clips. Be careful as they're likely to tear the hardboard around their mounting holes rather than pop out of the doors. The chrome strip can then be removed and then finally the upper panel which should just unhook from the door glass channel.
Cheers
Alan

Depending on mirror type and your driving position, it is possible to fit mirrors on the forward upper part of the door skin. There you have full access to the inside of the panel near the door switch without disturbing any trim. That's where I fitted convex bullets on my S3 OTS.
