#1 Rear axle leaking by the breather

Post by Mich7920 » Sun Mar 22, 2015 11:37 am

Hi all,

I need you for my problem.
If I put into my rear axle 2 3/4 pints of 85/140 Hypo?de oil it link.
It pollutes the right brake pad of course.
With 1 3/4 it don't leak but it's not recommended.
I notive there is nothing in my breather, no steel wool or other.
Could you have any experience with this ?

Kind regards
Michel

Hi Michel,

I would think that the sealing ring (Simmering) on the flange the brake disc mounts onto is defective, leaking oil if the oil level inside reaches it.

Thus at a low oil level it does not happen, at a higher level it does happen.

Sadly, only cure is to remove the rear axle, take it apart and go through it. Repair / overhaul brakes, handbrake, suspension, drive shafts and so on.

Enjoy british motoring of the past !

Hi Carsten,
Thanks for this reply but the leak is not here.

The oil flows out through the breather and not by the seals.

Since I get the car I fit out the rear axle 3 or 4 times and it beguin to be a pleasure instead of a challenge.
I love British old mecanical. I'm used to explain my friends that If they don't have any reflexion before getting the tools and during using them, get away, it's not for them!

Kind regards
Michel
