Early E-type console aluminum pattern

Attached are 2 pictures of my gauntlet and console. Is this the original aluminum used on the early E-types or just a base for the covering? Thanks.

The earlier cars had a dotty aluminium. I believe this cross pattern replaced the dotty aluminium at about October 1962. Later on Jaguar started to cover the centre armrest console with leather (although the aluminium was often beneath) but retained the aluminium instrument panel. Eventually it was all phased out in favour of the leather armrest & crinkle black instrument panel.

Yes, that looks like the pattern on the 1963ish cars.

I don't believe it is available now which is a shame as I would like to replace the dash panel on mine.

Not a very good photo I'm afraid, but it gives an idea. I have an inkling that Henry Pearman could help, but I can't be definite. Still, nothing to lose!

That is the earlier 'Dot' pattern which is once again being reproduced. The OP was enquiring about the 'Cross' pattern used in the later cars. All the info is in the link above.

I believe sheets with this pattern are available from www.astonservicedorset.com

Apparently, this cross hatch pattern was used for door jambs on 60s astons.

Yes, I checked with Aston Martin some years ago.
Confusingly they actually call the cross hatch pattern 'polka dot' but as you say it is sold for interior trim and it looks the same in photos.
It comes (came) in sheets 1250 x 410mm.

Someone somewhere has a die to press out the more usual dot panels - anyone know who that is? Maybe we could persuade them to do a few of the cross hatch.

Hi, I bought one of these sheets from Aston Martin . It's not as I had expected. Yes, it is the cross hatch pattern but it appears to be more an etched pattern rather than a stamped/rolled on pattern. I'm two minds on whether to use it or not. Cost a fortune though.

Hi mine was dispatched on the 21 November 1962, and has the dot pattern dash which looks to be original.

That's disappointing, it did seem from photos to be similar to 'ours'.

If I get a chance I will try and get a photo of my original 'Cross Hatch' dash and a photo of the Aston Martin replacement sheet. You can see what you reckon to it yourself then. Never posted a photo on here before so don't hold your breath. Cheers :?

Edit... Think I managed it. The Aston version anyway.

It just shows the corner with the Aston logo but I think you can see that it is etched as opposed to the original pressed version.

It looks nicely done but yes I can see the difference.
Is it very obvious in practice or only when you have the old and new side by side?

Hi,
It's the same scale of hatching but for me it just looks different. I think getting a hold of the original dies as you suggested is the way to go. It will be a while before I'm at the stage I'll need it so hoping something will turn up before then.
BTW,I was in a small supermarket the other day and I noticed that the checkout where they put your shopping was made of aluminium with a similar stamped pattern to the crosshatch we are talking about. It was just a bit too small a pattern. Still, I guess it shows there are similar things out there. I might experiment at making a die if there's still nothing available in the future.
