Hi all
It's getting to first service time for my car and I was wondering what oil is recommended for a series 1 4.2? Also how much oil would I need for a change?
Also I got talking to someone at a show recently that said to only use super unleaded fuel in my car. He said not to use regular unleaded. Suggested that super burned cooler and I guess also has the benefit of higher octane rating. Can I ask do most uk owners run super unleaded?
Thanks
Trevor

Any 20W 50 oil will do. I use Valvoline XLD.
Highest octane is best.

Hi Paul....According to the handbook 4.2 should be 15 pints.. 8.5 lit refill including the filter...the level on the dipstick depends on if u have the correct one and if it is installed correctly ...as above any 20/50 is ok......as per fuel the highest ocrane you can get on the forcourt..Steve

I use high octane where I can. Tesco momentum is rated 99, as is Shell V max, but it runs perfectly ok on 95 if necessary. Just better on higher octane. I use half it's "classic" 20/50 oil

Agree with other posts. Use super unleaded. Higher octane (usually at least 97RON) and right now in the UK it contains very little ethanol which causes issues with fuel systems in classic cars. Changed the oil in my 3.8 last month. Any 20w50 providing is is good quality. Millers or Penrite do nice oil. You will need two 5 litre cans. The XK holds a lot of oil. I would warm the engine. Drain the sump and remove the filter (care as oil is hot and old engine oil is not nice so wear disposable gloves). Fit the new filter and the sump plug!!! and refill to the appropriate level. Then crank without starting (remove one of the low tension leads to the coil or better remove the plugs) until the oil has circulated and the gauge shows oil pressure. Check for leaks at the filter. Connect leads or refit plugs and start her up. Last leak check and job done. While you are there may as well change the fuel filter and check the gauze filters at the float chamber banjos too. Happy motoring. Julian

And just to repeat what I posted elsewhere, right now Halfords are running a deal where for every 5 litres of their oil you buy - including Halfords Classic 20W50 - you get a free 8-piece professional screwdriver set (magnetised tips, thick grips, lifetime guarantee). I put the deal to the test at the weekend and very nice they are too.
The oil is ?19.99 for 5 litres, and the screwdrivers would normally set you back ?15. Bargain.
