data plates

Is anyone reproducing and correctly (font etc) stamping data plates in the UK nowadays? I bought my last one from the US which was superb, but of course it would be easier if available in the UK

You have a choice - the screen printed versions generally available over here which invariably loose their 'paint' over time or the superb photo-etched version available from Classic Jaguar in the States. They cost $35 plus another $35 (donated to charity) if you want it stamped with your car details. Turnaround time is about a week. I would fit nothing else as they have the correct TEX ACO text compared to the others available. More info: viewtopic.php?p=43521

thank you David. I had my first one from CJ and it is superb but was unaware of others not being unto scratch . Its CJ then. A great help :D

Has anyone actually handled a CJ data plate? I thought we debunked this suggestion last time?

It certainly does not LOOK photo-etched to me... Ergo there is no choice in the matter of substance, only layout of differing screen printed or maybe black-anodized

I have one Pete and it does feel etched as against the smooth (dismal and peeling} screen printed one. I will see if I can get a picture of them side by side for you. I can personally verify the CJ plate is immune to brake fluid though, unlike the other version.

Interesting. Thick ink can give a 3D effect but the opposite of bas-relief. I.e. The black parts would be slightly proud of the silver lines and characters, rather than sunken.

excellent. I have got one on my FHC already but I recall it being spot on. Will take a look earlier, I was just trying to see whether anyone in the UK was doing one as good.

As a slight aside do all series 1 cars have the little "made in England" plaque attached just below the data pate.

Mine doesn't- but that means nothing !!!

I thought it was just the export cars but I cannot say I know for sure. Certainly any US cars I have seen have it and my UK car did not.

Actually, mine was a US import and didn't have that badge. However, it may have been removed at some point??

Mine has no signs of a plate being fixed either assuming they all were fixed with 2 rivets, US export March 63

For info E-Type fabs are making balls on correct photo etched data plates now, you know what Uryk's like so expect them to be perfect.
They are only available through Hutson so save some cash and get one from there.

My data plate arrived today. Here is a comparisn of old and new - you can see why I needed a new one!

The quality of the plate is excellent and the stamping is very similar in a random sort of way to the original. Also, the new plate is very slightly thicker than the original. I only had my phone with me but hopefully you can see the thicknesses in this pic:

Anyway, in summary, extremely pleased with the reproduction quality.

I ordered mine today and it's already on its way across the Atlantic. I suppose I had better start on the restoration now! I always start with a stimulus, like a new data plate or the instruments or similar. :D

further to the data plate query, now sorted, can I move the topic onto the panel that the data plate fixes to? I have noted on many cars this panel is somewhat curved and a little wrinkled. Now of course this could be because the car has had a shunt but assuming they can't have all had a bump here can anyone shed any light on whether this panel should be perfectly flat. I certainly have seen rebuilt cars look perfect in this regard, but originally they seem to vary, and appear to have taken on the profile of the main inner sill which I suppose is correct since it is an extension of this panel. Also sometimes they appear to be kinked backwards on the front edge with a little wrinkle. Anyway, I hope thats not as clear as mud and you all know what I mean. I have a car which is a little wrinkly in this regard but does not look like its been touched , rewarded etc. I will try to load a photo
