#1 Bonnet

Post by Springer » Tue Jan 12, 2016 8:08 pm

I have started on the bonnet. A task I thought should be quite straightforward. Obviously not, at least not for me. So here are some questions:

From the pictures I can find including this forum I do not find anything helping me on where the cables are to go in the front of the bonnet. Below I have tried to put together the main questions in a cascade picture. Since I never took it apart I am left a bit in the dark:

Then it is the bonnet chrome beading. I have these clip to fix the bonnet chrome beading between the bonnet and the wings. I assume I will have to loosen the front wing enough to get these down and also to put in sealant?

But then I wonder about how to finnish it off in the back of the bonnet. There will have to be maybe an inch from the last place which I can get down one of these clip to the where I finnish it off as it will have to be in front of the strengthener. Is this the way it works? I think it looks a bit fragile.

Sorry for a bit unprecise language.

Hi Springer
Yes the cables go in the channel under the airscoops and are clipped at either end using P clips.
The headlamp cable does go through that hole through a rubber grommet.

The holes in the underpan are just drain holes, no cables go through them.

The back bonnet beading trim clip is usually put where you have shown it but the excess is cut off leaving about 10mm each side.

I would not recommend putting sealant into the seam myself, I recommend waxoyl instead. This allows water to drain out of the seams and the waxoyl protects the flanges. I did this 35 years ago in my S3 bonnet seams and when dismantled 2 years ago there was virtually no rust at all.

I recommend that you either fit the correct (thicker) washers in between the bonnet seams which hold the flanges apart for the clips, or loosen the bolts slightly enough to slide the clips in with the bonnet beading on them. Put waxoyl in, push the beading in and tighten up the bolts.

Thanks Alty Ian. That was quick.
One last question (at least for now) :D :
In the cable set I have bought, the two cables for the two horns are a part of this front bonnet cables. Since they are going on the frame I assume it is supposed to be dedicated holes one of each side to bring them out of the bonnet towards where the horns on the frame are going. I can not find any appropriate holes for them. Where are these cables normally going through?

For your S1 3.8 the horns should be mounted inside the bonnet on brackets under the headlight scoops. Has your underpan got these two brackets (they have 1/4" studs on top) on them? If not you need them, they are shown below.

It seems you think the horns go on the picture frame but they do NOT for your car.

They go here, they are black and discharge through the holes in your airducts into the mouth of the bonnet see below.

On the later S1 4.2's (I think) and S2's and s3's the horns went over the picture frame and the wiring loom which goes across the frame has the horn cables in it.

I had this problem with my 4.2 loom which wasnt wired (cables are purple with yellow stripe) into the bonnet plug.

Check that your loom has the purple/yellow cables in the bonnet plugs and front section. (it sounds like you do have them) if you have then great. If not then it may be that you have the wrong wiring loom for your car.

What I did was modify the loom and add a purple/yellow cable into the bonnet plug in the position as it should be.

The "what is this for" hole is (on my 4.2 car at least) for the pusher rod that activates the tilting of the front number plate mounting plate / bracket, possibly only fitted to US cars (but don't quote me on this!). I personally don't like the rod or the mounting plate so I've removed them.

The horns are "slightly" shown on page 41 of this link (the 3.8 service manual) wiring layout.

Check your wing to centre section spacing, you should be able to get a "tommestock" (wooden measuring device) between them, and you should be able to see the spacer washers. If this is such, then it's straight forward (-ish) to install the chrome beading and bend the ears on the brass.
