Hello,
I would like to fit the 8777SS front bare piston/cylinder units from SNG Barratt in stainless steel. Are there any experiences with them or also with the alternative 8777SS/1 and what do you think about the "original" quality part with number 8777#? Many thanky for your help.
Best regards

Front brake Piston/Cylinder from SNG Barratt ?

Unless you are keen on visual originality why not fit an after market four pot caliper. Coopercraft and Fosseway to name but two make bolt in replacement calipers that will provide far better stopping power than the original twin pot caliper. They were marginal in their day and given modern traffic and modern car brakes the old Dunlop cylinders are best polished up and put on a shelf. Mine has Coopercraft four pot alloy calipers....much more reassuring than the originals.

Actually the E-Type brakes were pretty good, it was the Dunlop cross ply tyres that compromised performance. The four pot calipers can lead to over braking if you are not careful. Fitting the S2 calipers, Volvo calipers or Zeus calipers is probably all you need with modern rubber and 25 cwt of car.

I usually fit the replacement aftermarket 8777# cylinder units on restorations and they work well. I do this because it costs the same as having old cylinders resleeved and I have had some problems with leaking with resleeved units.
I have no experience with the stainless units as they seem prohibitively expensive to me but I have no doubt they would work as well as the standard ones.
In proper working condition the standard series 1 brakes are just fine. I have owned 2 Series 1 cars with standard front calipers. They stop no worse than my series 1 with Volvo calipers and ventilated discs. I had Coopercraft calipers on my S1.5 for a while and there was no noticeable improvement in braking. I do use Greenstuff pads as they do seem to stop better, albeit they squeak more than standard pads.
