#1 indicator stalk

hi

the end of my replacement indicator stalk from Richard Smith that I bought some time ago has a fluted profile, yet when I came to try and fit it (original lost before I bought the car) i can see the original had a threaded end...?

Image

is this an early car anomaly or did a previous owner tap a thread perhaps..?

I could try and thread the end of the new stalk, but the chrome plating will make this difficult, and I don't know what thread is (not 2BA or 3/16 UNF as i tried a spare bolt)...so should I drill out and go for a push fit...?...is that what the later cars had perhaps..?

thanks
Jonathan

Not threaded, splined as in the one you have.

Thanks Angus

Good to know what I should have, but something isn't right then...the Lucas part has a date of 2-63 which would tally with the car which is a March build, but the depth of the threaded hole is only 6mm or so, and then splines are more like 12 or 13. So they will not get enough purchase...if I drill it deeper I am getting close to the pivot point on the indicator pivot...and why should I be modifying a part if it is the original part...Ethan's that is the issue...?...does the black coloured indicator pivot which receives the stalk look correct to you please ?

Regards
Jonathan

Thanks Steve
Good to read through....Interesting point about the lack of knurled ends as the stalks on Richards stand today at Stoneleigh didn't have them
The bit that doesn't make sense is why mine has a threaded hole....as I clearly recall unscrewing a short remnant bit ....I can only conclude mine has been changed in the past...looks like I need a replacement pivot piece..or modify mine to increase the depth

Your stalk receiver bit looks manky. Threads are home-made.Is it epoxy or goo around the hole? It should be press fit into the mazak quadrant IIRC. Doubtless it's all done on a jig originally. I'd epoxy it in and build up around the insertion.

Hi Jonathan,

Also a thread doesn't make sense as how could you initiailly tighten it to get it in the correct position, plus every time you indicate it would tighten or loosen.

Jonathan,

That 'threaded joint' doesn't look original, or at least compared to mine. Mine has a long (5-8mm maybe) sleeve protruding where you seem to have a diy brazed thingy.

I will try and get a picture later today.

Cheers.

Someone's modified that. There should be a cylindrical piece about 1/2" long there with a splined hole in it.

Thanks guys, that all makes a lot of sense, especially the bit about a thread unwinding when using the indicator....
Simon, a picture would be excellent to have, then I can see what I need to replicate....although I will also see if a replacement part can be bought, will put up a wanted add

I had to purchase a complete repro unit as the entire assembly & housing was missing from my 3.8. Can't remember if it was from Holden or SNG but look the same. Pic here...

Jonathan,
before (again) changing or even renewing the main part, you could have a part made which has a thread for the existing thread, and the female part sticking out to receive the indicator handle. You might have to shorten the indicator handle to keep the overall length in check. I think that wouldn't look too bad?

Here's a picture of mine when I rebuilt it:

If you end up buying a complete unit, I will buy the new shaft off you.

Cheers.

Hi Martin...kind of what was going through my mind today.......or I see if I come across the female part in some auto jumble and swop it over...or modify a female part and piggy back it on....it's the splines that would probably be the tricky part to replicate..we have plenty of 3D printers at work..but sadly none of them print in metal...🤔

Simon..sounds like a plan if all else fails..!...thanks..😉
