Hi there

I am looking to freshen up my headlamps and the scoops behind the glass covers look a little bit grubby etc. I've got 2 options, get my local bodyshop to paint them or buy a new set.

Can someone tell me if I buy a new set will they need painting or should they just be inserted as they come? Also is there any trimming etc required to get them to fit? Looking to get them from SNG Barratt

Repair rather than replace. With cars like ours it's important to retain as much of the OE as possible. You don't want to end up with a replica

Should you decide to buy new from SNGB, they come painted (hammertone finish) ready to install.

A quick wire brush down, and a can of steel wheels, and you're away for another 50 years !

And you know they will fit!

Which is by far the most important consideration.

There is a rubber U section strip that goes all the way around the front of the scoop. This is best glued in place with Superglue prior to fitting.

Pay attention to the positioning of spacers etc on the 3 bolts when you remove them.

And despite what you may think the bolts are attached to the captive nuts on the scoop and then pass through the diaphragm. Nuts are fitted on the wheel well side.

I have the same dilemma as Trevor and would prefer to keep the originals despite one of the captive nuts having rusted away. What colour paint do I need to buy and who makes it?

I used hammerite grey or was it hammerite silver.

Originally they were a straight silver-grey metallic, NOT hammertone, unless it's a flat-floor car in which case they are body colour.

As I said in my earlier post, I find a paint called Steel Wheels as close as one can get to the original, and it is very convenient to use, needing no primer

Flat floor E-Types also had silver painted sugar scoops as well. Certainly all the ones I've seen including my own.

Only the very early S1 cars (first 500) had body painted scoops. It was changed after complaints about the headlights and Jaguar thought this would improve things. In actual fact I found out, 54 years later, that the addition of a couple of simple relays solved the problem!

Alan and David, this is one of the very early features that did not change after just 500 cars. Body-coloured sugar scoops roughly coincide with the 'welded-louver' bonnets, which continued through at least most of the run of flat-floor cars. Whether or not Jaguar had complaints about the lighting, there are also other differences in paint finishes that would indicate that these earlier bonnets were painted in a more fully assembled state. --Mark

I'll check with the original. I have one lft with the car, the other one got lost with one of the POs apparently.
