Removing water temperature gauge

Hi team,
Whilst waiting for my wiring harnesses to arrive i am moving the guages to the correct RHD layout.
Now I need to withdraw the Water Temp gauge, the wire is encased in a spiral steel wire sheath (similar to the choke or heater operating wires).
The wire and sheath appear to be permanently attached to the rear of the guage.
Similarly the sensor appears to be permanently fixed to the wire / sheath.
Do i pull the sensor back to the dash panel to achieve my goal.
Or perchance can they be disconnected.

Tony : it sounds to me as though you have a non-standard bourdon tube type of gauge, ( similar to , but not identical to , that fitted to XKs and earlier saloons ) which is totally different from the electric gauge fitted as standard to all E types . The usual gauge is run by an electric wire taken from a sensor which is screwed into the top of the water passages of the manifolds/thermostat housings ( it varies according to model but for a 4.2 it is usually on the top of the inlet manifold at the front ) . perhaps if you posted a photo of your gauge and the pipe, someone may be able to help further

Both of the gauges shown are non standard more modern replacements. Have all your gauges been been replaced with those ? Shame if they have.

That type of temp gauge contains a tube not a wire inside the sheath connecting the bulb to the gauge. It contains a liquid and the whole thing is a sealed unit. You will have to withdraw it all through the dash if you want to save it. The threaded bit on the back of the gauge looks odd though, almost like it should have a knurled nut on it like a speedo.

If you are as keen on originality as most people on here you will have to chuck them all away anyway and try to source a set of original gauges !

My fuel is Smiths and amps is a Lucas, so i guess they are proper.
The oil has a tube coming back to dash, Suntune again.
OK I need to find Smiths then, any hints where to look, or is Google my friend.

Ideally you need to swap over the bezel from an original (wedge for S1, round for S2) but that can be easily done at any time:
