door problems

Hi,

Am progressing with the rebuild to the point where door seals have been fitted. The door is well aligned with the swage line and the top chrome is fixed in securely with space all around but when we put the seal in the outer edge of the chrome it locks the door up at the top. We have obtained the shorter and more flexible seal from COH Baines and with the silly door handles that you cannot get your fingers through the door is impossible to open. We have not even got the cantrail chrome strip on as yet which presumably will make it even more difficult. Only saving grace was that the windscreen is not in place yet and can lean in and bang the door open from inside. Door closed perfectly before the seal went in place.

Any suggestions welcome.

George, try wiping some silicone grease on the rubber.

Yes this happens. Hopefully as the rubber ages it will take a "set" and the problem will improve.

As suggested a little silicone spray may help. You could also try turning the rubber around so that the seal points with the concave section inwards. This will make shutting the door harder but may help.

A third option is to use a different seal on the body (20mm diameter hollow, circular cross section) and leave the seals off the top of the door completely.

The door seals are essentially a bugger and it is hard to get the door adjusted so that the standard seals work without causing opening and closing problems.

Well got the can of silicone spray that was used to fit rubber seals on my Z1 lights and it seems to have done the trick, the door can now be opened reasonably easily and it also looks as though the seals are taking a bit of a set too.
