#1 Seal fitting directions - pictures please

Post by JD-JAG66 » Fri Oct 14, 2016 12:23 pm

Hello,
I have come to a point where I have to start installing seals on my 1966 Series 1 2+2...
Unfortunately I did not take any pictures when removing the old ones so was browsing the forum trying to find some, but either in windows explorer or google chrome, hardly any pictures show up anymore.
So can anybody provide me with pictures in which I can see in which "direction" all the door seals are fitted?
I basically need to know where the "opening" of the U shaped seals go.
1) A and B post seals, does the opening face the body or the inside of the door opening?
2) Door frame seal - BD21964/3 does the opening goes inwards or outwards?
3) Quarter light seal - BD17071/2 with a very small lip, does the blunt side of the seal point towards the inside of the car?
All help welcome!!!

Your J38 2+2 parts book shows orientation by small 'zoom-effect' close-up drawings.

Jan

This morning I was preparing a post to ask seal (rubbers) questions and did a quick search prior to sending and found your post. I am at this very stage with my 65 FHC. The previous owner seemed to use any seal available from a generic seal catalog. The usual parts suppliers are not helpful. My parts book does not have orientation detail. I really have two questions:
1) Seal BD17071/2 seems to go in both the quarter light post facing the door window frame and the after channel of the door window frame. How do these seals intercept? Do the lips interlock?
2) What material is being used to mount the quarter light glass in the frame. I have found a butyl rubber tape and prefer not to use a caulk as a well known parts supplier suggested.

All the best

Hello Francis,
Cannot really help you with the first question.
I will feed the quarter light seals in their rails, if I can. Otherwise, as per posts on this forum I might just glue them in like it was done on the first cars.
No idea, again, on the interlocking since I do not have the J38 parts catalogue. Hoping for some feedback from other users.
Good luck.

J38 is specific to your car Jan - the Series 1 2+2.

My first E-Type was a 66 2+2 and before I did ANYTHING else I bought a copy of the Spares Book J38.

I've been called an 'expert' but it's usually b*llocks. 99% of the time I simply regurgitate what I have read or looked up in the appropriate manual. You are slightly isolated I expect from other E-type folks in Italy, so I would think being self-sufficient would be helpful? Instead of 'hoping' for feedback and people to look in their books you could know the answer. It even helps you filter sometimes inaccurate correspondence (e.g. mixing up FHC and 2+2 which often differ)?

I cannot recall an official classic Jag spares manual that did not have a drawing of seal orientation, which was your question. Restoring a car without the correct literature must be like doing a jigsaw without a picture. I'm currently assembling a 1936 SS Jaguar for which no illustrated parts manual exists. It's horribly inefficient and I am embarrassed to pester the few people in the world who know these cars.

Hello Peter,
I couldn't agree more on the importance of having at hand whatever information required so as not having to bother anybody.
However it was also a bit of a surprise to hear of the existence of the J38 catalogue with "detailed" drawings".
This because, I have downloaded the Parts Catalogue PDF files from SNG barratt, Anglo Parts, SC parts and Terrys Jaguar. I even have a paper spare parts catalogue from SNG barratt which they provided FOC together with an order some months ago.
Unfortunately I was not confident in deciding on the direction of any of the seals based on the drawings found in above catalogues.
That said, I have found in the forum, the E type parts catalogue with some very good drawings from which I think I can decide on "glueing" directions.
Wishing you the best of luck with your '36 SS Jaguar restoration.

J38 is specific to the S1 2+2 that you have. In many matters body-related - including seals - the 2+2.differs from other models. Ergo, you can have a pile of manuals and search the knowledge base and still not have the info you need if you don't have the J38 manual for your particular car. Good luck.

NB, although J38 is not here, the S3 2+2 parts book *may* help, as Jaguar showed seal orientation in all their E manuals IIRC. A 2+2.S3 is the E-type model I have never owned so I'' not 100% sure the seals stayed the same although I expect they did.
