Quicky as I'm supposed to be working:
Engine Flywheel etc obviously
Gearbox
Clutch
Brake hydraulics
Seats
Trim
There will be more but that's all I can manage in 30secs. Overal a more refined drive with more torque. Some think the 3.8 a more sporty drive. I've only had a quick drive in a 3.8 so can't really compare.

Not bad for 30 secs, thats pretty much it. The 4.2 cars are worth slightly more and are a bit easier to drive, whilst the 3.8 is more of a purist drive which does tent to feel like an old car but the 4.2 feels very refined for a 60's sports car.
I like both models for different reasons, I sold my 3.8 to buy a 4.2 and then I missed the 3.8. It would be nice to have both if the war department and wallet would allow it.
We should be greatfull that we're in the fortunate position the have an E-type never mind two.
My Ideal is a 3.8 OTS, 4.2 FHC, V12 OTS

Hi there,
a few more details (that I personally know off, there will undoubtebly be more) following Andy's excellent overview:
3.8: "weaknesses" versus 4.2 :
moss gearbox is not synchronised (1st) and difficult to work on should you need to
seats are really not comfortable (especially if you are a big "lubber" like I am)
interior dashboard is largely in aluminium (which looks really great so can be a "strength" but on the other hand is difficult to maintain "unharmed")
I have tried both and personally I find the "smoothness" of the 4.2 engine more appealing with lots of middle torque, again, that is a personal note whereas the 3.8 is rather more "nervous".
Also, not sure id this is a weakness or strength, the early 3.8 had outside bonnet hatches which looks kind of cool but is not that handy.
voila, my five cents,
cheers
Erik
