Boot board dimensions

I'm fairly certain that the boot boards in my car are original, but does someone know the exact dimensions of the 2 rear ones so that I can make some replacements as mine are warped. Mine are are both 738 long, one is
300 mm wide, and the other 650 mm.

Just measured mine, Andy. Pretty much the same length, 740mm but a tad wider, 305 and 660.
No reason to believe they're not original. They are quite a tight fit.

Thanks for that. The board that sits above the IRS should, I believe, have a bracket attached to the rear edge of the board, but mine is missing. This bracket I think extends up over the 3 upstand brackets that are welded to the floor. Screws go through this bracket into the upstands to secure the board. I assume that the vinyl covering of the board extends rearwards to cover this bracket. Is that correct? Are the 3 screws visible inside the car, or are they somehow secreted? This is how I think the arrangement should be....

I restored my boot boards a couple of years ago. I’ll take some photos later of how it goes together. The screws aren’t visible when everything is assembled.

Hi Andy. By coincidence I've also got the boards out of mine to redo. Although its a 2+2, it looks like the dimensions are the same. They're 740 long but 308 and 660 wide and seem to be the original boards, which I'm hoping to re-use, even though they're a bit rough on some edges. They're 10mm thick, but seems you can't get plywood at that thickness anymore, so presume 9mm is the best option.

The metal strip was fixed to the other board, but no vinyl over it. The vinyl is just wrapped over the board edge and stapled underneath, but I know that's not the original covering.

Have you got any spare long luggage rails? I'm missing 2 of them, so will leave them all off for the time being, unless I can get the others, without paying the crazy price of new ones. Will stick an ad on here anyway.

Andy, take note that the edges of the original boards are beveled on some if not all edges. I replaced mine with boards I cut myself and did not bevel the edges. They fit fine but may just be a little tighter than the originals. Also note that the embedded fasteners that hold the securing brackets are not the same size. Make a note when removing, so you will have a reference to where they go back. I have some photos, but it has been several years since I did mine, so I would have to dig them up. If you need a certain photo, I will try to find it for you.

And as Geoff says, the rails are rare and expensive, so careful with those.

Here is a picture of the area. I sand blasted the whole interior of the car and on the interior bulkhead, floors, sill tops and flat area at the forward boot I applied POR-15. POR-15 is an "paint over rust" sealer that bonds to rust and metal. I used the gray color. So in the picture, the gray area you see is the metal piece you are asking about.

Here’s some photos of my car. I used as much of the original timber and foam as possible. Only the board and foam over the spare wasn’t salvageable.

At the leading edge, the panel over the IRS tucks under a lip that’s attached to the body. The lip is trimmed in vinyl. I kept this original as I didn’t have any of the furry trim that goes in the compartment beneath the gold down flap. The furry trim covers the front edge of the vinyl trim on the lip. At the back of the IRS cover, there’s a metal flange that screws to the underside of the panel. There’s some self-tappers that then screw through this panel into the up stand sections on the body.

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful. Particularly the photos. Off to the scrapyard tomorrow to see if I can find a suitable piece of angle. And it looks like I'll have room for some more sound proofing over the IRS.

Thanks to all your help, the mystery of how my boot boards hang together is now fully resolved, and a new set have been fabricated. What had really flummoxed me was that I was missing the support bracket that attaches to the rear edge of the board over the top of the IRS. This bracket in turn supports the forward edges of the 2 rear boards. I managed to find some unequal angle in my local scrappies for £1 which works perfectly, and avoided the necessity of paying a breathtaking £73.50 for BD28350!! And of course what's even better is that I can now go to the pub again and invest the £72.50 that I have saved on Harveys Best!!

What did you do for the clips that receive the pins fitted on the leading edges of the removable boards?

The front edge of the removable boards will be secured with Velcro which I've ordered. Not original I know, but seemed to me to be very practical. You may already be aware of bresco.com [01509 610834] who supply an amazing range of trim clips and fasteners. If not, take a look at the site. COH Baines supply the rubber insert in 1m lengths as do Woolies.

Geoff - I secured the rails with small stainless countersunk screws. Probably easier than fannying around with pins or staples. Having got the front board in place with the rails fitted it was very easy to sit the rails on the rear boards in the car in the correct position, use a bradawl to make holes in the boards at the screw positions, and then attach the rails on the bench rather than bending over the back of the car.

I was also very pleased with how the hinge and lock covers, and the centre arm rest lid came out. My pal is an upholsterer, and made new coverings from the original patterns for me to fit. Fortunately, he is really good with a sewing machine which is why all the seams came out so straight.

Question for any 2+2 owners - Should the rear seat lay flush with the other panel when pushed forward? Mine is touching the metal frame piece underneath and can't adjust it to move forwards anymore
