#1 Replacement rocker switches

Post by cmdrew » Tue Oct 04, 2022 9:36 pm

Having a good look through the electrics of my 69 DHC and have found that a number of the rocker switches (actually most of them) weren't working. A quick look behind the panel revealed a number of wires not connected but some of the switches were past their best also.
So I have bought replacement switches (Hazard / Fan and Wiper) from SNG Barratt and printed off various wiring diagrams so I can hopefully wire them up correctly. The issue I am having is the switches just don't seem right and don't have the same terminals as the ones I took out. For example, the fan switch is 3 position so presumably a live going in and 2 feeds to the fan going out, one for low speed and one high. Same for the wiper switch. The problem I have is that I have been through all of the terminal combinations on the switches and can't identify 2 outputs for either! The wiring diagram I have does give some numbers for the connections but these don't seem to work for the switches I have.

Has anyone replaced the switches and if so have any wiring hints as to which connector goes to which wire?

One of the problems is that the suppliers often can't get exactly the right switch and so provide you with one that they think will do the job.

SNGB have a technical department. It might be worth asking them.

This may help its a schematic and may not be correct for your car..check your chassis number against any diagram you use......The correct Jaguar service manual will have wireing diagrams that have the switch contact number shown and what colour wire goes on it....you can look up the actual switch part number and find diagrams of the internal contact arrangement of each switch .....Steve

Hi Chris

Not sure if these pics may be of use? My car is FHC built late in '69, so you won't have the HRW switch which is on the far RHS of the top pic. Going from R to L from the HRW switch is fan, washer, wiper. The bottom pic shows the hazard switch on the LH end. I only mention this because I don't know how the switches are arranged in a roadster.
These switches are easy to take apart and clean, but if you do it's best to try and do this with the switch inside a plastic bag to catch any little thingamajigs that may want to fly across the garage never to be seen again.

Chris, I’ve had similar experiences on my S2 where the switch for the wipers was different to the diagram Steve has posted and shown in other diagrams. If you’re happy with electrical work you may need to just try how they work, they can be cleaned up but watch for springs flying out. And when I upgraded to intermittent wipers I had fun getting it all to work properly for one wire, iirc the black, wasn’t present at all yet shown in the books. Seen here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4718

BTW did you find someone (Ken Jenkins?) to look over your car?

I'll second the switch cleaning principle, it's quite easy as long as you are careful with the dismantling.

Inside a poly bag is a good idea as long as you can clearly see how all the bits come apart. Do 1 switch at a time!

Thanks goers to SNG Barratt who very kindly sent me some technical notes on what the terminal numbers are for the new switches and the wiring for them. I will have another go tonight and see if I can at least get the wipers and hazard lights working. A couple of the old switches had literally fallen apart inside so can't be fixed but I am hopeful that knowing what terminals are used will help - not saying of course that the heater fan actually works or that the low speed wiper works either but somehow I have lost my power probe which would have really helped with that!
