#1 Window mechanism

Post by Pex » Thu Feb 09, 2023 3:34 pm

Sound damping my doors on my S2 OTS and overhauling my window frame and mechanism.
Should there be a play in the window lift mechanism, seems like the small toothed weeel have a 60 degree play before the mechanism starts moving. Like the small wheel rotate a bit on its shaft before it starts to move the toohts on the lift mechanism.
The thin metal strip on the second picture, should it just lay in the frame and be bended in both ends to stay in place or should it work as a spring to keep some pressure on the window when it moves up and down?

Hi Peter...there should be no play.....look at the teeth the center ones are more worn than the ones at each end....see if this is causing your problem. ...you can buy repair kits....if its just teath wear you could weld and reshape them......Steve

The small cog will be worn.

I tried welding the original small cog, and just ended up with a fused blob of metal. Might be my welding skills were at fault :-)

You could buy replacements for both pieces from XKs Unlimited, so Moss may still have them.

I had one replacement small cog fail due to faulty spot welding. Check replacement before installing as it is not an easy job.

That's a lot better than the XKS offering that was just the cog.

Thanks for the input, but it isn’t the teeth’s that are worn.
It is the small toothed wheel that has a play before it actually moves the big toothed metal part.
Missed to check the other door  and it has exactly the same play so I assume it’s by design.

Hi Peter there is a small lever attached to the small cog that releases the "brake" spring...that holds the window in any desired position...so yes there is some movement befor window moves.....this shows how the internals work...Steve http://www.da7c.co.uk/technical_torque_ ... anism.html
