Gearbox leak

Is there a front oil seal on the 4.2 gearbox? I replaced the seal on the clutch housing but still have a leak. I have a 1970 E Type coupe.

As well as the seal in the clutch housing, there is also a large gasket. It covers the whole front face of the gearbox and seals up against the rear of the clutch housing.

Are you sure the leak is from the gearbox and not the dreaded rear crank rope seal!

The seal for the housing is behind the clutch fork. I have the Terry’s Jaguar rear main oil seal conversion that replaces the rope seal. I replaced the large gasket, but saw there is a front seal mentioned in the parts catalog for the gearbox. Did not see one when I took it apart.

The first thing is to decide what type of oil is leaking out. Is it gearbox oil or engine oil, I'm sure you know how to decide, if not just ask. When we know the oil type then we can give you a list of possibilities for a fix.

The only seal at the front area of the Gearbox is the Lip Seal pressed into the face of the Bell Housing that interfaces with the front face of the Gearbox; there are no others at the front of the Gearbox.

When I refurbish a Jaguar Gearbox, I use a Front Bearings that is equipped with shields. I remove the rear shield of the bearing that faces to the rear and leave the front shield in place. This allows oil into the bearing for lubrication, but greatly limits the amount of oil that the First Motion Shaft seal is exposed to.
