2+2 B Post seal and Qtr light seals
#1 2+2 B Post seal and Qtr light seals
This is only applicable to 2+2 cars.
I bought what I thought was all the seals I needed from Baines last October, but now that I need to fit them I have got a bit confused with what I have. I do not have any originals as they were all perished and thrown away 10 years ago. The A post seals fitted fine but when I looked at the B post seal that was supplied it started to become puzzling. I wanted BD28434 for the B post and BD20500 for the Qtr light but Baines sent me a list of seals for E Types which add to the confusion due to them giving their own part numbers, so BD20500 was supplied as SRS071 and this was also supplied as the B post seal. SRS071 is the hard rubber/foam seal which a lot of people have complained about.
The hard rubber part of this seal seems nigh on impossible to fit in the Qtr light retainer channel but I will persevere with that.
So will the Qtr light seal work for the B post?
Having looked at Baines's web site today, they now show a B post seal for the S3 which looks the same as the A post profile. Would this tubular seal (JM5) work better than the SRS071 on the B post.
I also bought another seal IRS1455J which is described as E Type Quarterlight hinge pillar seal. Not sure where this is supposed to fit, any ideas? Maybe its not for a 2+2. I can see there is a T slot in the chrome pillar but thats on the door side and would be covered by the B post seal.
I hope someone has all the correct seals fitted and can advise what is best.
Many thanks

Well, I didn't think my questions were that difficult to answer, 664 views and not a single response
Anyway in the hope of making it a bit easier to understand, the photo below shows a piece of each seal on the B post and it also shows the slot in the forward face of the Qtr light pillar.
Someone had similar questions in the S3 section back in 2018 and the only response was to confirm the parts book part numbers of the original seals which are no longer available. Baines use their own part numbers and profiles.
Fingers crossed someone will have the answers.
Thanks

#4 Re: 2+2 B Post seal and Qtr light seals
Hello Steve and Tony,
The following picture shows the section that is supplied by the Jaguar parts suppliers for the "B" Pillar of all 2+2 cars. This section is actually correct for the Quarter Glass and is supplied for the "B" Pillar due to the correct "B" Pillar section being unavailable from any source. As can be seen from this picture, this seal is made using two different densities of rubber. The section that fits into the seal retainer strip of the car is quite hard and should you have the misfortune of being supplied such a seal, the result will be a door slammer, requiring a run up to slam the door hard enough to close it.
Some resort to cutting and removing the section of the seal between the two Red lines shown in the following picture to allow the door to close reasonably, but to me, that's tantamount to buying a dog and then having to bark for it. Some suppliers supply the above section seal made completely from a very soft rubber and they work. Accordingly, if the seal supplied is made using the two densities of rubber, don't waste your time with it and seek a supplier of the soft rubber version
The following picture shows the sections of all seals used on 2+2 cars and as can be seen, the seal section second from the top of the right hand column is the correct section (no longer available) for the "B" Pillar and the seal being supplied is shown five down from the top of the left column.
Regards,
Bill

#5 Re: 2+2 B Post seal and Qtr light seals
Thanks Bill, I had read what you have added previously when I was searching for the answers.
The only seal I have come across is the hard rubber/foam section which you say not to use so I guess the better option is to try the round hollow section that Baines now supply for the S3 B post. I was hoping somebody would tell me that one works best but it looks like I'll be the one to try it.
I still don't know if the chrome pillar should have a seal or not, it has a T slot on the door side but I don't see anything in the parts books, so maybe its a common pillar section used on the other models that have a seal at that location. Baines supply a Qtr. light hinge seal IRS1455J, which fits in the slot but doesn't look like it would do anything.
Thanks

Thanks Steve, however what you are telling me is exactly what I have, the BD17071 Qtr light hinge seal is what Baines supply as IRS1455J.
If the hard rubber/foam seal is fitted to the B post (from the gutter to sill) it almost covers the Qtr light hinge seal making it seem useless. I will try to photograph this later to show what I mean.
I do not have the doors fitted at the moment so perhaps it will appear different when everything is in place.
I am going to order the tubular (round section) seal for the B post as that would appear a better choice especially if I mitre the joint where it meets the A post seal in the top corner of the B post.
Thanks

Hi Tony..in a post above you said "I still don't know if the chrome pillar should have a seal or not, it has a T slot on the door side but I don't see anything in the parts books" .....The hinge pillar does have a seal....seal goes on after you fit the B post seal....you should be fitting the doors first to make sure they fit and close correctly....then fit the seals....Steve

Tony, as Steve points out with lots of help, fit the doors first, get them properly aligned with the rest of the car, door windows included. That way you’ll make sure everything fits nicely, or adjust to get that.
You may find you have to adjust the angle of the rear quarter light and or the door windows.
Also buy excess seals, they are relatively inexpensive, but you can do trial and error to get the doors and them fitting neatly.

#11 Re: 2+2 B Post seal and Qtr light seals
Okay, had another look today and have taken the following photos which show what I mean, hopefully. The Qtr light hinge seal supplied by Baines does not fit the T slot in the pillar by a long way, I had to remove a fair bit to make the small piece fit in the slot.
I took the doors off to fit the A post seals and the alignment of the door shell without the chrome frame is correct. I can hold the empty shell with one arm and a knee whilst fitting the bolts, getting willing reliable help is limited.
Option 1 hard/foam seal
Option 2 round Series 3 B post seal
This photo shows the pillar from outside looking at the seals, the hinge seal is not visible which makes me wonder if there should be one there.
Pillar T slot dimensions, in inches
Seal dimensions, in inches
As you can see, the T of the seal is much bigger than the T slot in the pillar.
I hope it is much easier to see the issue now.
Thanks

Just been searching as many supplier sites as I can to try and find some information. Looks like Moss have the answer with no seal on the hinge pillar of the 2+2.
Just seen the all foam B post seal at Robeys, R14/3 is the part number listed for 2+2 and S3

#15 Re: 2+2 B Post seal and Qtr light seals
Hi Steve, I can see that it looks like there should be a seal on the pillar but I cannot find any mention of BD17071 in the S2 or S3 parts books, the S3 illustrated book does not show anything.
The SNG illustrated catalogue (MK6) in the knowledge base looks to be incorrect as it lists BD17071 (4 off) as the quarter light seal and BD20500 as the vertical quarter light seal for S2/3 2+2. Where would you fit 4 seals? I think you do on an FHC but not a 2+2.
I don't doubt you did fit a seal on the pillar, I just need to see the evidence of it being correct so can you show a factory parts list as I can't find one.
Thanks

Thanks Bill, I now have a choice of suppliers to try.
I'll refit the pillar now and forget about the seal it doesn't have.
So glad I'm not doing this for a living, I wouldn't be making any money.
