#1 Thermostat temperature?

Post by JerryL770 » Wed Jun 04, 2025 1:14 pm

What is the correct thermostat (opening temperature/part number) for a S2 4.2 engine?

I cannot find any data.

Thanks Steve. From your link, I gather the correct temperature setting is 82°C

The manuals in the Knowledge base don't help me much. For S2, there is nothing in sections 4 or 5 and there is no Service Manual complete for a S2 as far as I can see, only for a S1. The Supplementary information in Section D gives nothing away with respect to the thermostat.

However, all I really needed is the temperature rating.

Thanks, Jerry

The S2 section of the service manual has a cooling section....for thermostats it refers you to section D6...it obviously dosnt give part numbers..thats in the parts catalogue....but it gives temp range....Steve..ps from the link I posted...its a US site ........"stock S2 thermostat was designed to open at 75C (168F), but 82C (180F) was recommended for "winter use" and should be fine year round. Late Series 2 cars (starting around June 1969) all came with 82C thermostats for emissions reasons. When changing to a hotter thermostat, thought should be given to the set point of the otter switch"
