123 Distributor question
#1 123 Distributor question
The 123 again, I have recently fitted 123 Jag 6RV , I have set 10deg BTDC , at light loads and under say 2000 rpm I notice slight miss fire or hesitation , hard acceleration and higher revs seems fine , it seems light load related , vac is connected and pipe seems ok . I am on switch position 0 any ideas please .

Put your old distributor back in and see if the problem is still there.
If not it's the 123. Otherwise go over the carbs.

Hi Alan....I have a 123 on my MGC and quite a while ago helped a friend fit the jag one to his E....and we had this problem.......in the small instruction book for the MGC it says to set the 123 to 8dbtdc.....but in the book on the jag 123 it said to set it to tdc it then takes into acount the 10deg that u have already set it to.....so basicaly if u have the instructions have a good read. And try setting your 123 to tdc.....as for the setting switchesi its a bit of trial and error....hope this helps...Steve

#6 123 distributor
Thanks Steve , I think 10 deg BTDC static is correct for Jag 123 , on strobe at low revs it is 10 deg BTDC , Instructions are a little confusing , but think this is correct for the Jag one but standard 123 is set TDC .I have tried setting from BTDC 2 deg to 12 deg , low speed range up to about 1700 ish still not correct . I think I will put old distributor back and see how it behaves , I have had this rebuilt and calibrated as spare so know this is O K .
Thanks for your interest .

#8 123 distributor
Not 100% sure what the problem was but the car is running much better now ,. may get carbs rebuilt if carby expert has any doubts . I removed the 123 and put old distributor back , regular slight missfire had gone still not good response under light load . Put 123 back with curve 5 now selected and made mixture richer , when they were set before was 35 deg day now high teens so made richer by quarter of a turn . Carby expert always changes his by this amount winter to summer . So most likely too lean plus ?? maybe poor lead connection , maybe curve 5 better for my car . Hope this is the end of the saga .
Thanks too all for the advice interest .

Hi,
I got the 123/TUNE and made my own curves from data from the manual. I know the curves for the 123 JAG are to agressive. You should have the GB version and use the lower settings.
I also suspected a too lean setting.

Hi Alan
Just changed my 22D distributor to a Powerspark distributor after chasing bad running with a miss fire for a while. The difference is dramatic, it's like a new car. I took apart the old distributor to overhaul it and discovered someone had welded a small piece of metal onto the end of the advance cam which was limiting the total advance. I have filed it off and added a, electronic hall effect ignition to the distributor which I'll now carry as a spare.
Incidentally what is the VIN of your car, mine was built on 12/11/69 and is a LHD 4.2 OTS exported to the USA now in France, also primrose when built, now a Ferrari yellow, not by me, painted in 1993 long before I got it but very attractive at least to my eyes. It is 1R11453 and can be seen on E Type register.
