#1 Door locks

Post by Bob Falfa » Mon Jul 10, 2017 5:41 pm

Before I fork out £130 on a new door handle and lock mechanism, I just wanted to check my suspicions that it's the plunger mechanism that is worn? See photo and video.

When I press the handle's button, it goes all the way in without opening the door. The spring housing looks fine (I'm aware these wear out). The mechanism from inside the car works fine too.

Answers please!

This is a very common problem . The key lock operates a link which disables the plunger . The link has 3 holes on it, into one of which fits a lug on a ring on the outside of the plunger mechanism. As the ring is rotated by movement of the link in one direction activated by turning the key in the unlock direction it enables the plunger, and so the pushbutton will release the door. With the key turned in the locking direction, it moves the link the other way, which rotates the ring so as to disable the plunger. The adjustment of the link is critical and is very fiddly, and as the mechanisms wear, there is a tendency for the ring gradually to move itself with each opening and shutting of the door until the plunger is disabled. The door then has to be key unlocked , after which you often get a few more cycles of normal operation before the key operation has to be repeated

PS looking at your pics which have now come up , the ring mechanism looks to me to be missing from your plunger ; you may find it and an associated spring in the bottom of the door- although I may be barking up the wrong tree because there are some 2+2 cars which do have a separate lock ( and therefore no ring ) but do not have the key going into the push button. I cannot see whether your lock is one of those or not, and I am afraid I don't know quite how they work

Hi Bob,
Nothing wrong based on the video.
The plunger should get stocked when turned at a certain angle.

There is a bracket with same hole pattern that are turning the plunger and make the button pushing on the locking mechanism at this specific angel.

One of the usual problem is when the screw and locking nut comes loose at the end of the plunger. This will make the bracket rotate without bringing the plunger to the Correct angel.

I hope that you can understand even though I'm a swede.

Good luck.

I thought one of my locks was knackered for the same reason as you.

When the button was pushed the plunger did not extend.

I disassembled/reassembled the fiddly mechanism to no avail.

Unlock the door with the key-click. Push the button, plunger would not engage.

The problem turned out to be the first link from the plunger to the door catch.

Turns out it is adjustable and wasn't giving enough clearance for the lock mechanism to unlock with the key.

It has 3 holes. I chose and alternative hole to alter the length of the link and bingo, it worked properly.

I also had this problem(amongst others) with one of my door locks. In the end it was down to the cumulative wear of the entire mechanism. I ended up drilling another hole above the factory drilled row and the lock now works perfectly £130 saved.

Cheers

Thanks for all your replies - very helpful.

It appears that the plunger mechanism is worn. So I've decided to purchase a new unit...but apparently you can only buy them in pairs!

Anyone want a new passenger handle and barrel assembley?
