Apart from "not rolling back on hills", D2 is a better option for pulling away on slippery surfaces eg mud, ice, snow or wet grass.

Actually, no. At least not for spirited driving on twisty roads.

'L' can be used to lock into 2nd gear and this is one of the nicer modes on a 6cyl auto E (all things being relative, of course). On some country roads, you rarely need bottom gear when pressing on, yet those same roads can often mean it's quicker to rev out in second to the next bend than change up to third. Ergo, being locked in second gives you most of what you want for sporty driving between, say, 15 mph-70 mph. Why not try it and report back?
