I have a 69 which is fitted with the pre engaged starter M45G ( presumably).
I have a problem where if you crank the engine and it does not fire when you turn the key back it sounds as though the starter is still turning and it takes time to spin until it stops ( even with the key switched off).
Before removing the motor, looking at the haynes manual should I to assume that this could be the "brake shoes and cross peg" that are worn out or something more serious.
Recon units are not that expensive so i would presumably be better to go this route rather than getting it reconditioned??

Also I have had a problem with my rev counter which works intermittently and then dies. If i tap the screen it comes back again for a while but then dies again. Have checked all the electrics and have also earthed it by way of the fixing bolts on the back as read that this might be the problem but it still does not seem to work correctly. Any thoughts please?

Mine did this too. I lived with it until the brushes wore down and then I discovered the cost of a light weight high torque starter motor. Fitted, never regretted the change. I still have the Lucas starter, new brushes fitted, waiting for either a need to use it or a desire to sell it on.

I had the same problem on my S2. Baffled me for a bit. It would only fire when I released the key.

Turned out I had swapped the oil sender and coil wire . They look a similar colour and fall in about the same place in the engine bay.

Swapped them back them sorted.

BTW, you will have fun trying to get the starter motor out. There is a panel in the gearbox tunnel on my car to access one of the fixtures. Others have fashioned keepers for the nuts with bent wire to aid installation. I managed without, but it was a fiddle.

With out doubt one of the best upgrades you can do is to fit a high torque starter motor.
I fitted one to my 69 2+2 and have never looked back , you will have twice the power on start up and will draw less power from the battery. There are a few types to choose from but I can highly recommend a Fossway starter motor from Fossway engineering ( you tube has a demo to watch ) priced around the £200.00
mark not the cheapest but in my opinion one of the best.
